Today marks Pirate-Community's nineteenth birthday, one step closer to two decades of existence! While nothing particularly noteworthy happened to the Rayman series over the past year, the community itself has been thriving.
On the research side of things, the discovery of cut Rayman 4 functionality and mechanics in Rayman Raving Rabbids and the release of the source code for the engine for Rayman 2 which was found in a leaked version of Rayman Raving Rabbids for the Nintendo DS led to numerous findings and even paved for the way for new types of potential fan games. Unpublished tunes created for Rayman Junior were discovered too, as well the elusive video "Rayman's training" which is now available in its entirety.
The modding scene has not been left behind, with numerous patches that allow for a better experience of Rayman games, from texture packs to multiplayer support. Many fan games are in development, and while there have been no major releases as of the past year, a lot of content is being created for Rayman ReDesigner.
Finally, we at Pirate-Community had the pleasure to host the second edition of our speedrunning contest, SpeedRay 2022, with shiny cash for the talented winners!
As for the usual statistics, 9,562 messages were posted on the forum, with a total of 1,362,896, and 138 new articles were created on RayWiki, leading to 5977 in 8 languages. To many more!
Long live Rayman, long live Pirate-Community!

Yeah it is. But there are several odd things about how the game handles it:
1. The game save has two special flags for the level which it saves, something which is very unusual. Usually the game just does this for if you've beaten a boss. There's a flag which gets set when you "accept" the mission from Joe (when the image of Joe giving Rayman the firefly appears) and then another flag when you "complete" the mission by hitting the switch. Neither of these flags are necessary since you can't leave the level once you enter it, so why does the game save them?
Now let's see how the game uses them. In the function DETER_WORLD_AND_LEVEL which sets the level to load, the game does this: "finBosslevel[1] & 2" is the flag for if you've accepted the mission. So what it's doing is this:
If you're trying to load Eat at Joe's 1 and have already accepted the mission then the game loads Eat at Joe's 2 instead and also gives you the firefly ("RayEvts[1] = RayEvts[1] | 4").
If you're trying to load Eat at Joe's 2 in the demo mode then the game gives you the firefly only if you've accepted the mission. Why would that check need to be there? Probably a leftover from how the code used to be structured. To make up for this the function InitDemoJeu actually sets the flag saying you've accepted the mission (along with one other flag): 2. Now what about the second flag I mentioned? Yep the game does indeed save when you hit the plug: What is this used for? Well this determines several things. First it determines if the UFO objects should move when Rayman lands on them. So if you managed to get to the next map without hitting the plug then none of the UFO objects would move! It also determines if Joe should spawn in the last map, the beach one. If you get there without hitting the plug then Joe isn't there. Obviously both of these scenarios are impossible in the final game, yet the game has checks for them.
3. Eat at Joe's 5 and 7 use the same maps:
This is probably nothing new, and makes sense from a story perspective. But you won't really notice this when playing the level. So why go through all this trouble of making them the same? Maybe they were originally one map? If say the UFO has been there in map 5 and it wouldn't function because you hadn't hit the plug yet then that'd make sense. You'd then enter a side-level, the one with the plug, and return here afterwards. Then it also makes sense why map 4 loops back to the start since you go back the way you came.
Now it's also worth mentioning the game does something sort of similar with the super-helicopter potion. You actually have to help the Musician for any of them to spawn. So if you went to Pencil Pentathlon without helping him then the potion wouldn't spawn!

Just to double check, did you try all three 1.12 versions in RCP? When I was going through the known versions of the game for this I found 3 different versions of 1.12, so it can be any of them used here.emkay wrote: ↑Wed Mar 22, 2023 7:57 pm Ah, okay, thanks. DX+ uses version 1.12. Setting that as the version in RCP seems to almost-but-not-quite work - the stdout.txt file in the TPLS folder records a "Activating custom Rayman soundtrack" whereas it didn't do that when the RCP version was set to auto... but it still seems to be stuck using the PC soundtrack rather than the PS1 soundtrack.

Yeah, the file that came with the GOG install is 419 kB, whereas the one in the Rayman DX+ download is 906 kB, so that struck me as a notable difference, although I don't know if it's necessarily significant.

I felt like the premise is that Joe is asking Rayman to go into the caves and reconnect the power, Rayman does so, then retraces his steps and goes back to Joe.

It's been getting warmer lately but stil raining a lot, and it's been pretty windy the past few days too.

Hi everyone!
One year after the launch of our speedrunning section, which came with the first edition of our speedrunning contest where participants won rare items of Rayman merchandize, we have decided to go for it again! Therefore, allow me to introduce SpeedRay 2022.
This time, the prizes will be a combined $200 of gift cards, and there will be only one category, where everyone will play the three main games. How will this work? Click here to find out!

Happy New Year to all!
While 2021 may have been even stranger than 2020 in some respects, let's be hopeful than 2022, while it may not come packed with Rayman news, will be the return to normal we've been waiting for for so long!

Today, Pirate-Community just turned eighteen. While the Rayman franchise is in limbo, and the past year was marked by Michel Ancel's departure from the video game industry, the community is still active and productive, with a strong focus on fan games, reverse-engineering and tooling, and Pirate-Community is at the very center of it. Always providing fans with the best possible resources and discussion platforms, we've extended our coverage with the creation of a new Rayman speedrunning section, which hosted a successful contest in which the fastest runners won rare merchandise, and we've connected further with the rest of the community, as shown by our affiliation with the r/Rayman subreddit
Over the last year, 16,639 messages were posted on the forum, adding to a total of 1,353,334, while RayWiki, with 111 new articles, now boasts a total of 5,839 in 8 languages. RayTunes saw many additions to its already extensive coverage of Rayman music, with new tracks from seven games from Rayman Junior to Rayman Mini.
The Rayman 3 Hall of Fame was also brought back from the dead thanks to our members' expertise, and plans are underway to create one for Rayman Raving Rabbids.
Pirate-Community has reached the age of majority for most countries in the world now, which is an impressive achievement no one would have expected at the time of its creation, and we are more determined than ever to ensure it will still be around for an even longer period of time.
Long live Rayman, long live Pirate-Community!

Hello, fellow Pirate-Community members. It seems very unusual to see me here! But, that's because it's really for a very special announcement. As the owner of the /r/Rayman subreddit!
We are happy to announce that the r/Rayman has finally joined forces with the Rayman Pirate-Community Forum!
That's right, you read this correctly! It’s been long time coming, but we have finally made it to this point. Its forum houses the great services from RayTunes, Raywiki and RaySaves. Not to mention, has been a key contributor to all things Rayman and essentially the grandfather of all communities including our own! We noticed we share the same beliefs of making the community bigger and better. So we are very glad to be a part of this change.
It would be very nice if people in this community can support eachother. So we implore you if you can please join and sign up for the Reddit today. It will really contribute to its activity and will be greatly appreciated!
That being said, we have finally opened a Rayman Discord server which has been in the works for a long while now. In addition, to celebrate the week of its return. We are going to host a VC event for the current Ubisoft Forward which will be happening on Saturday 12th June, on 12PM PDT! We are very excited to host this event.
If you want to join the new server: Send a PM to myself, Steo or Hunchman801 to get an invite I hope we can see you there for this upcoming event!

It's with great pleasure that I announce the launch of our brand new speedrunning section!
The Rayman series provides runners with a diverse set of games on which they can test their creativity in their attempts to complete them in the fastest way possible, therefore it's no surprise that the Rayman speedrunning community is thriving today, thanks to its active and talented runners but also thanks to all those who support them, whether by building tools or discovering glitches.
In order to provide the community with a great space to share runs, discuss techniques and participate in various events, we are lucky to be assisted by a team of experienced runners who will ensure that we remain on top of the speedrunning game! So far, we have been joined by kronkie10, DarnokPL, markyard44, Lucidruns, Payman, DepressingChild and ScalieDan! Their experience extends across most of the series, from Rayman 1 to Rayman Legends, and even the popular fangame Rayman Redemption. And for those who settle for nothing but perfection, we even have some serious TAS (tool-assisted speedrun) action going on! I must stress that we are still actively recruiting, so if you're an experienced runner interested in moderating this section, by all means please get in touch and let's give the speedrunning community the forum it deserves!
There are things however that no human does better than computers, and that's why our faithful SpeedBot will be posting all the latest runs from speedrun.com in this section, so that you'll never miss an important breakthrough or a crucial leaderboard change!
And of course, a launch would be quite sad without a celebration, that's why we have decided to host a worldwide speedrunning competition with rare Rayman merch for prizes! Surely that's a good enough reason to fire up your games and dust off those speedrunning skills, isn't it?
In the future, we hope to provide you with many more cool events and features, so please stay tuned and let the race begin!

A new fanmade game by Ryemanni has been released, titled Rayman ReDesigner. The game is similar to Rayman Designer, where players can design levels which others can play, but it also contains additional content, such as content from Rayman Redemption.
