Rayman 3 - Scrapped Story

Hey there,

I posted about this in the 2D Nightmare topic but I felt that was not the place for this, nor any other topic.
Yesterday I was going through the Rayman 3 text files and accidently looked at the beta demo's files. I noticed there's quite a lot of scrapped stuff in there: not only developer notes, placeholder text from a song ("There is a light that never goes out" by the Smiths) and the final dialogue, but also scrapped dialogue of what seems to be a much, much, much earlier version of Rayman 3. The earlier names of some hoodlums are mentioned, Murfy appears to be with Rayman for a much longer time in this, Clark is in it, lums are mentioned a few times, there's a volcano Rayman needs to get to, swimming was going to be more like in R2, etc. It's in French though, so it needs to be translated. I'll update this topic while I translate. Can anyone help?

However, you could push it with a succession of punches.
Tutorial - Those strings do not bode well…
Touching them will activate a trap.
Aaaahhh, a swarm of insects, run!
There’s a plum. Get it down by punching it.
Pick it up by stopping next to it.
Throw it on the plant by shooting.
Here’s a narrow horizontal space between two walls.
You can hang between them by pushing JUMP when you’re in it.
WARNING, the floor is full of thorns and you might get hurt !
You can also use that plum
to climb on slippery surfaces thanks to its juice.
You just need to burst it by giving it a good charged punch.
Attention, you’ll lose the plum juice if you go in the water.
Here’s a GI. (I really have no idea what that is, sorry)
You can grab it by jumping on it. You can let go by pushing JUMP.
If you hold the strafe button,
you can lock on an enemy and strafe in/on a GI !
You can also shoot with your fist : teach that crab a lesson !
That sound doesn’t tell me anything worthwhile… go take a look Rayman.
THE MASTERCAG (=master kaag -> master cag -> master cagoulard -> master hoodlum -> now we know where the name comes from!) ... there’s nothing like balancing
rocks on the clown that manipulates them.
The entrance is blocked, I/we/you should find another passage.
The entrance shouldn’t be far.
With extra weight, that tile would break easily.
The knaaren are invincible creatures. You’d better avoid them.
Use that snipe lum (= shock rocket ?) to ring the gong and get the attention of the knaaren elsewhere. The snipe lums can also serve to explore some passages from a distance.
I advise you to put a rock on that switch if you want the gate to stay open.
Look Rayman, we must be able to get to the heart of the Knaaren city by going through the corridor under the Leptys’ head!
We must find a way to bring the draft here to get to it! The Knaarens won’t let you pass.
You must find a way to pass without letting them see you !
Look Rayman, you have to go through that little hole, at the end of the corridor down there, in the right wall!
That Knaaren lever must open the great gate. You should be able to push it!
DEBUG NOTE : To activate the toby (warning, that destroys a big number of Knaarens), push CROSS UP and CIRCLE
Rayman, hide in that small cave to the left, and get the Knaaren’s attention by ringing the gong. Then, run and look for the ring !
Rayman, you have to climb the tower without being spotted ! Use the gong to lure the first Knaaren away…

Tu peux aussi te servir de cette prune\lpour grimper sur des sufaces glissantes grace à son jus\lIl te suffit de l'eclater en donnant un bon coup de poing accumulé dedans\lAttention, tu perd le jus de prune si tu va dans l'eau  Voici un GI.\lTu t'y accroche en sautant dessus. Tu t'en decroche en appuyant sur SAUT  Si tu maintient le bouton de straff,\ltu peux locker un ennemi et straffer en GI!\lTu peux aussi tirer avec ton poing : donne une leçon à ce crabe !    Ce bruit ne me dit rien qui vaille ... va voir Rayman.  THE MASTERCAG ... rien de tel que de balancer\l3 pierres sur le guignol qui le manipule.    L' entrée est bloquée, il faut trouver un autre passage.    L' entrée ne devrait pas être loin. Avec un poids supplémentaire, cette dalle cèderait facilement.  Les knaaren sont des créatures invincibles. Il vaut mieux\lpas tenter de les affronter. Utilise ce lums snipe pour taper sur le gong\let attirer le knaaren ailleurs.   Les lums snipe peuvent aussi servir aussi à explorer\là distance certains passages. Je te conseille de poser une pierre sur cet interrupteur \lsi tu veux que la porte reste ouverte.   Regarde Rayman, on doit pouvoir accéder au coeur de la cité Knaaren\len passant par le couloir au dessus de la tête du Leyptis ! Il faut que\ltu trouve un moyen d'amener le courant d'air jusqu'ici pour l'atteindre ! Les Knaarens ne te laisseront pas passer.\lIl faut que tu trouve un moyen de passer sans qu'ils ne te voient !  Regarde Rayman, tu dois pouvoir passer par ce petit trou, \lau bout du couloir en bas, dans le mur de droite !  Ce levier Knaaren doit ouvrir la grande porte\lTu dois pouvoir le pousser ! NOTE DEBUG : pour activer le toby (attention cela detruit un grand\l nombre de Knaarens) appuyez sur CROIX HAUT et ROND Rayman, cache toi dans cette petite grotte à gauche,\let attire le Knaaren en tapant sur le gong.\lEnsuite, cours chercher l'anneau !   Rayman, tu dois monter en haut de la Tour sans te faire repérer !\lUtilise le gong pour détourner le premier Knaaren... Chui derrière le portail Rayman ! Aide moi à entrer.    En cassant la pierre, tu pourrais passer par la gouttière.  Configuration parfaite pour un Strike...    Je peux pas suivre. Aide moi à passer Rayman.   Bloqué !! Il va falloir passer par la courroie de la grosse scie.   Hey Rayman ! Trouve le moyen d' obstruer le conduit de vapeur.  On dirait bien que ces planches cachent un passage. Pousse toi vite Rayman !    Chui en bas Rayman ! Fais moi monter !  Je suis sûr qu'il faut qu'on appuie ensemble sur\l les interrupteurs pour ouvrir la porte !\lJe prend celui de gauche ! Ce Garde nous bouche le chemin !\lIl faut tuer le sorcier qui le protège !  Need Time ? KILL ANY FxxKIN' CAG !!!!!  Rayman, tu peux utiliser le Toby au dessus de toi en faisant l'helico ! CINEMATIQUE : L'artificier pete la Tour et s'enfuit avec l'anneau   Le Lums Snipe est tres puissant, il te permet d'eliminer un ennemi. \l   Accumules et dirige le vers ta cible   AOJ : Delivre le Leptys que Reflux a asservi par cette energie : \l brise les boucliers reflechissants les flux magiques qui asservent le Leptys \l CINEMATIQUE : Reflux plante le sceptre, Le Letyps est sous l'emprise de Reflux. \l C'est la cata !  AOJ : Bravo, a present il faut pour detruire le sceptre : \l detourne les 4 flux vers le Sceptre qui ne supportera pas tant d'energie  \ l  CINEMATIQUE : Reflux est sonné par le dernier flux  CINEMATIQUE : La sceptre explose, la Tour aussi, Globox surgit en navette et sauve Rayman   Globox : Waow ! C'est génial on vole !!!    Globox : lutte contre le courant pour aller à gauche !  Globox : lutte contre le courant pour aller à droite !  Globox : bravo, laisse le revenir au centre du courant !    Globox : maintenant essais d'aller vers le haut !   Globox : tu es un super pilote .. yahouuuu !    Globox : attention, evites les projectiles !    Oups,  lesPtizetre forestiers ont ferme le passage ouest de la foret ! \l Mais comme d'hab ils ont oublie de fermer la fenetre ces endives ! \l Si seulement on pouvait l'atteindre...  Il est trop rapide ! \l Un seul poing ne semble pas suffire pour le battre !    On dirait que ce cagoulard possede un objet \l  Passes par en haut si tu veux, moi je tiens pas a me luxer une cuisse ! Ooh ils ont capture un flabard ! \l Si je le libere il pourra m'aider!  Pour plonger, appuie sur L. Pour nager, utilises le stick\l Pour remonter appuie sur X  Globox : Je suis juste derriere ! \l Casse la poutre qui bloque la porte !! Ooh le lum d'argent ambidextre !! \l Grace a lui tu pourras tirer des deux poings ! Globox : Le wooglah est blesse, Il faut trouver un antidote \l dans ces marais  ! Je reste ici en attendant Cette branche m'a l'air bien fragile, mieux vaut ne pas s' attarder dessus...   Tu as besoin d'un grappin pour passer cette zone ! \l Ca te suffit pas deja de plus avoir ni bras ni jambes ?   Des cagoulards echoues, la zone doit en etre infestee...    Oooh un lum d'argent !! Avec un grappin j'arriverais a l'atteindre...   Une bonne rouade de coup devrait pouvoir briser ces echasses    Bravo !! Grace a ce lum tu va pouvoir tirer en courbe et\l  contourner des obstacles ! \l  Pour l'utiliser, tire tout en straffant a gauche ou a droite En tirant avec une trajectoire courbe, tu pourrais \l surement te debarasser de ce cagoulard... Le concile des fees est attaque, allons-y ! Murfy : Rejoins moi en sautant, en appuyant sur X !!    Murfy : Poule mouillée, sors de l'eau et reviens sauter!    Murfy : Rejoins moi en faisant un plus grand saut ! Appuies sur X pour\l sauter et appuies et maintiens X pour faire l'helicoptere. Narrateur : Le lums noir avalé par Globox lui a dérobé le pourvoir\lde la danse de la pluie, et nos deux compères doivent trouver\lune solution pour traverser les Deadlands à l'abris de la chaleur infernale. Globox : Cette drole de carcasse pourrait être un bon abris!    Globox : On dirait que la lumière les fait disparaitre? Globox : Je suis certain que je pourrais lancer cette pierre\lplus loin que toi!    Ludivine : Ce couloir mystérieux semble mener dans le royaume\ldes Knaaren. C'est un peuple de l'ombre, les légendes\lles disent complètement invicibles!   Ludivine : Faites bien attention à vous, mes héros! Globox : J'ai des fourmis dans les pattes, monte sur mon dos on va grimper ca ! Oooohh une Tribelle !! C'est l'espece la plus peureuse de toute la Croisee ! \l On dit que ceux qui arrivent a s'en approcher sans \l leur faire peur sont toujours recompenses...  Narrateur : La sortie du monde des Knaarens s'écroule derrière\lnos deux amis.  Narrateur : Le dernier temple est en vue, mais les cagoulards\lne semblent pas décidés à laisser Rayman les en déloger.

That's intriguing... can't wait for more. Irritating, though; I've always thought that Rayman 3 would be better if it were more like R2. :mefiant: Way to rub it in, Ubi - leave your pants hanging out.

Wow, a lot of this stuff fits with what we’ve heard about the game’s early development. The use of the Flabar (Mawpaw/Bonton) to overcome obstacles, the Hoodoo having the ability to shoot fireballs...

With Clark and Silver Lums, this game already sounds much better than the one we got. A remake incorporating the scrapped content sure would be nice, Ubisoft.

I still think they should have ditched the ‘cool’ song altogether and just used the trailer from the demo, which had perfectly good music of its own.

I agree, I really liked that music.
Anyway, I just did a little bit more, apparently there were traps in Rayman 3. And swarms of insects you had to run from, according to the part I'm translating now. Sounds like a lot more fun than what we got actually :P

Wow, I can't wait to read the rest in English. The earlier R3 really look a lot better than the final version.

I also would have prefered that Ubisoft keeped this music:

I translated a lot more, it's all about Knaarens now, the "toby" which destroys a big number of knaarens, lum powerups (=comeback fatigues) and the mysterious "GI". Anyone knows what that might be?

Hm, it looks like lums were replaced by Laser-Washing Powders later in development.

Eh. It's sad that so many things got scrapped because of "overloading the game with creatures and sending the player off on false trails"...

Let’s hope that that Tribelle allows me to avoid
going back through the trap zone.
Interesting... Even as minor creatures as Tribelles had bigger role before. :(

Sorry for bumping, but I did another translation of french, it sequels where Droolie stopped (I did a little part, will continue next time), sorry for the sometimes bad syntax, I'm french.

Hate to sound like a jerk but changes are made during development all the time. I don't know the full process but I do know that most games do have cut content in them, Ratchet and Clank being an example that shows you what they cut out. I do agree that I would've like to see Clark again, but I'm happy with the product I got.

Hehe, I think we're all aware of the (sometimes extreme) changes that can go on in development cycles, but it's fascinating to know what could've been. Rayman 3 is one of those games that I think could've done with more time, it's possibly the shortest game in the entire series, and it's a pity some of the prerelease concepts weren't realised, such as the Aquatic World.

I checked and I'm not really sure if it's even from Rayman 3. For some reason, the files also contain leftovers of Gran Turismo 3 text, so it's possible that it's from there (but unlikely). I think it served as some kind of font test or a test of the dialogue engine, not as a song they planned to use in the game.

Also: while looking at the PS2 beta demo, I found more text! Yay.

The second one is interesting because it seems closer to the final game, and yet, significant changes have definitely been made.
  • Globox talks about glutes all the time (more than in the final game!), but it's more likely he's referencing the bird here.
  • Murfy's dialogue has remained similar, but the changes are interesting.
  • The 1,000 Lums of Energy weren't put together in the Heart of the World, instead they were placed in a safe in the central bank - André and the Hoodlums were bank robbers.
  • It seems Globox and Rayman travelled with a bird called a Wooglah, but at a certain point, it got wounded. Murfy pointed them in the direction of the witch Bégoniax in the moor, whom they asked for help. In return, Bégoniax asked them to find a beauty elixir hidden in the moor.
  • And moar.
Interesting stuff from the first script:
  • There were multiple upgrades throughout the game that you obtained with silver Lums. They were: "Stream of punches" (punch with 2 fists, this seems to be the default in the final game), "Curved punch" (we know this one!), "Razibus Punch" (punch far and hit multiple enemies), "Thermic punch", "Strength upgrade", "Speed upgrade".
  • Hoodlums could speak.
  • There were special powerup lums like the "snipe lum" and the "super-helicopter lum" - these have turned into the laser-washing powders in the final game.
  • There was a lot more depth to the story: smaller creatures like the Wooglah, the Flabar, and even the Tribelles played a bigger role.
  • You could use plum juice to climb on slippery surfaces by punching plums really hard, thus covering your hands in their juice! You'd lose the juice if you went into the water.
  • There was a place called the "Crossroads" that served the same purpose as the Hall of Doors.
  • And much more!

End of script is "Transition in swamp_82, swamp are in the game files the Bog of Murk and they says "inside begoniax house".

How did you come to the conclusion that those are the Xowar secret creatures?
The bird in there is a Glute, then there is a Mawpaw/Bonton/Flabar and then obviously the Xowar.

Yeah, a lot of it is just debug text. I'm 90% sure "caca1", "caca2" etc. was text they printed when certain things happened in the game, in order to fix a bug. :)

If they had left everything in, I think the game would have had more depth than Rayman 2. From the looks of it, the beginning would have been more fun to play, too: André and the Hoodlums destroy the safe, releasing the yellow Lums in the Fairy Council. Globox and Clark work together to block the door and stop the Lums from going out of there while Rayman and Murfy find another exit, but in the end everything blows up and Rayman has to collect the 1,000 Lums all over again. :)
