Re: Games you consider underrated
Psychonauts sold like dog shit, but it's far from underrated, which is good, because it's a masterpiece. One game that absolutely no one in the world but me likes is Aqua Teen Hunger Force Zombie Ninja Pro-Am for PS2. I'm a huge Aqua Teen fan (at least, I used to be), so I went nuts for all the continuity porn and humor. The golf/beat-em-up gameplay was pretty fun, and the levels were rich in atmosphere and detail. The frat aliens' golf-kart racing minigames, which happened once every 3-4 levels, just sucked, but they were funny. This might be the novelty and nostalgia talking, but I don't think it deserves all the flack it gets; it's at least just mediocre, but I love it. It also has some cool exclusive videos for collecting the broodwich in every level, which gives it great replay value. And, let me tell you, that video is AMAZING.

You just remember me that I should continue to play Psychonauts.

You won't be disappointed. Excellent game, and some of the funniest writing this side of Portal 2, Grand Theft Auto V, and Thomas Was Alone.Haruka wrote:You just remember me that I should continue to play Psychonauts.

One game, it's pretty old, that's underrated is Nine: The Last resort.
It looks like this
And it's just a simple masterpiece
The game sold so badly the company behind the game went bankrupt :/

I actually enjoyed the campaign in 2010's Medal of Honor more than any Call of Duty game to date.

I didn't see that there was a counterpart to the overrated games topic, so here goes
Dark Cloud (PS2)
People condemn this game for being way too repetitive and boring, which it kind of is, but it's expected to be since it's a dungeon RPG (a genre that was fairly new outside of Japan in the early 2000s). Nevertheless, and despite some graphical bugs the game has a very immersive atmosphere and is very, very enjoyable to play through. It's one of my favorite game of all time, but nodoby else seems to like it.
The smurfs (NES)
It may not be true outside of France, but in our country, thanks to a big Youtuber, everybody like to talk about the SNES Smurf game, which is a nightmare to play due to its difficulty, and everyone forgets that the NES version is a pleasant platformer, with nice graphics, a great soundtrack and a coherent difficulty curve. Definitely a game to pick up and enjoy, but everybody seems to have forgotten it.

An underrated game ?
Metro 2033 or Metro : Fear The Future
That game and its sequel are masterpeices that too few people played, albeit being a linear FPS, it is more, the game actually has deep and dark universe, and it is pretty normal since it is the video game adaptation of Dmitri Gloukhovski's book of the same name.
The graphics are absolutely stunning, and something completely amazing is that it is a budget game, yup, it is the last game of THQ, I discovered the Metro universe since nearly two years and I absolutely recommend it, you can go for a genocide run and exterminate the Dark Ones, or try to understand them throughout the adventure.
What a pity it wasn't a AAA game though, from what I've read it was supposed to be open worlded like Fallout.

Re: Games you consider underrated
This may come as hyprocritical when you consider my stance on fanmods like project M but...
The Binding of Isaac : Antibirth (PC)
Antibirth is a mod created by fans which is a continuation of Rebirth (but cannot coincide with Afterbirth, boo) which introduces four new alternates roads and a brand new final boss. This a major increase in difficulty and to counterbalance it a whole new batch of items, from basic to outright broken. Along all that come brand new mechanics that greatly impact the way the game is played and the new bosses are fought.
The creation process is worthy of the original dev-team, and while it's still buggy here and there (and there's a massive glitch that prevents you from entering the alternate final boss), it is really admirable to see that the mod team has absorbed so beautifully the essence of what makes Binding of Isaac so enjoyable, except for one particular thing :
They took most of the subtlety away [ ] and that comes from a game that wasn't exactly subtle to begin with. But somehow it makes the whole experience better [ ]. Overall, I think it's a great mod but many people discard it because it came out after the release of Afterbirth and isn't compatible with it.

Re: Games you consider underrated
A game that I found was criticized by some people:
Mario Kart 8
Despite having DLC additional characters and whatnot, it doesn't place as the best Mario kart game. Some of the items in the game are really sketchy as well. Some of the characters do not make sense for a character to be played as(e.g Pink gold Peach and baby Rosalina.."The Hell!!) Metal Mario and baby Peach were fine on their own but the developers went overboard. Mario kart wii beats this game by a long shot and it is because (just like what a person said on a live stream that I was watching) "it is more competitive than Mario kart 8, this wii U version only depended on characters not competition". The graphics are great but the concepts needed more work.
These are comments that I can remember. This may not the best Mario kart game.
EDIT:This isn't all, though. Mario Kart 8 really isn't that bad. There are still some youtubers who are doing videos of it and it is good to see it have a Wi-Fi tournament that is a lot different from the other games. Instead of all room players playing at once until the end. In Mario kart 8, it works like a "last man standing". It is kinda cool to participate in. It actually looks fun, to be honest. There is some competitiveness in the game but not as much as in Mario kart wii.

Re: Games you consider underrated
The Rayman series unfortunately is not very well-known but it is still a great series in my opinion. The only games I (and probably many people) wouldn't suggest buying is Rayman Raving Rabbids. It sucks. I've actually played it on PC with my brother and it was boring. And the quite sad thing about Ubisoft nowadays is that they don't focus on Rayman anymore, they only focus on making those terrible Assasin's Creed DLCs. But despite that, I love the Rayman series. *And I also think that Rayman should get more attention.

Do you have any idea what you're talking about, or was that just an arbitrary jab at a popular franchise you've probably never played?Aaron wrote:they only focus on making those terrible Assasin's Creed DLCs.
I'll just pop in with the shocker: Sonic Boom - I know I've covered this before, but not on its own terms. It's underrated in the sense that while it's not really a very good game, it doesn't even graze the territory of being awful, let alone "one of the worst games of all time". The characters each feel uniquely fun to control, the graphics, while looking a little unfinished in some places look remarkably awe-inspiring in others, I think the platforming segments are fairly well-paced and enjoyable, and the combat, while not the most well thought out, does have more strategy to it than just button mashing and trumps the kind of shit you'd see in Ty 3; if you go into the game expecting a button-masher, you will die very quickly in the more difficult combat segments. The cutscenes, writing and voice acting are also well done. The in-game character dialogue, while not nearly as annoying as everyone touts, is just kind of unnecessary.
The issue with the game is that, well, it doesn't feel finished, and there are too many boring stretches. The game is rarely if ever downright awful though. Regarding the bugs, yeah, I did clip through a wall once giving me the option to skip a pretty large portion of a level. Did that bother me though? Not really, because I just chose to go back and continue off from where I was. I never understood why people get so incredibly enraged over stuff like the occasional clipping bug, because if anything, I just find them amusing, and they don't detract from my experience at all really. The only annoying technical issue is the framerate, though that's something I got used to pretty quick since it doesn't actually interfere with the gameplay itself. I'm not sure why people complain about the the camera, because while it's positioned unusually close to the ground for a platformer, it functions correctly in the context of the game and never got in the way or caused me to die or anything.
The hate for this game has to be one of the single biggest, most unfortunate examples of bandwagon shit I've ever seen, and that annoys me a lot because there was clearly passion put in, and it's not bad. It's not that good, but I was surprised by how often I did find myself genuinely enjoying myself. There were also some design choices in the game I thought did well to modernise the action-platformer genre, many of which people seem to actively disregard now (or at least ignore) because they hate the game to such an irrational extent that new indie 3D platformers end up almost purposely failing in a few areas where Sonic Boom succeeded.

Re: Games you consider underrated
The Castlevania Lords of Shadow series, lots of fans were dissapointed by them but I still very much enjoyed them.
Sure, metroidvanias are 10/10 games imo but they really don't age well, imagine one on current gen consoles; people outside the fanbase would never buy them.

The only way they can pull it off if they take notes from the Megaman series, by make them look retro-like and not trying to sell them for 50 euros/dollars.
I don't think people would still think paying so much money for a game like Symphony of the Night, it's an amazing game but the masses won't do it, only a dedicated audience would.
