That is priceless! One can imagine someone painstakingly transcribing all that gibberish, imagining that it's full of meaning! And then of course the corrections are nowhere near as neat :hap: I wonder how the person who corrected it was able to figure out what was what – did they have to painstakingly type it all back in and change the encoding I wonder…

What baffles me is how the sender did not have the faintest idea of what Russian Cyrillic looks like and diligently wrote all of this gibberish by hand, probably thinking to himself or herself, "man, those Russians sure love diacritics!".

Most can't and I can barely understand it. Most places I even see it would be relating to public transport, where they will state things in both English and Irish.

Oh yeah, I've heard of the legendary "Dublin Bus Irish" dialect, where they just looked up each word in the dictionary and wrote them down in the exact same order! I think it's been improved in the last decade or two though!

I didn't know they had done that before.

I looked a few weeks ago when I was on one, a sign says something like "Please exit the bus through the centre doors only" (I can't recall exactly how it's worded but it was basically saying this), and in Irish it's written as "Fág an bus trí na doirse láir amháin, le do thoil". They also do it with "Keep Window Open" where it says "Coimeád an Fhuinneog ar Oscailt".

Yeah, those seem OK – those are Covid signs, right? But why not just "don't close the window" / "ná dún an fhuinneog" I wonder :fou:

I was talking about cosmic-ray-induced bit-flips in the You Game recently, and I just came across this nice video on the subject:

Maybe the Science topic should have Cosmic Rays as its next theme? :hap:

Very instructive video! How I miss the good old times of debates in the science and religion topics now. :nostalgic:

We never had a debate in the Science topic though, did we? :fou: As for the Religion topic, it was mistakenly locked for a period of two years or so, but I believe I rectified that some time ago…

Maybe not, I must be confusing with the religion topic where a lot of debates definitely happened!

Actually, come to think of it, when Shroob created the Science topic, it was about Teleportation, and it was kicked off with a kind of "spiritual" debate too! (As in, where do "you" go if "your body" is teleported…) Autonomous vehicles are kinda debate-worthy too, even if they seem to be part of some kind of irreversible trend…

In that context, cosmic rays feel kinda boring :hap:

Teleportation does indeed bring a lot of questions regarding the true essence of our "self"! I wonder if those topics would garner interest today if we actively pushed them? Maybe the awesome and cool poll thread is enough for now, though.

Lol, I remember this came into the limelight again when a Mario 64 speedrunner mysteriously teleported and that was the only viable explanation.

On that teleportation/essence of self note, there's no reason why reconstructing your body out of different particles (or identical entangled ones?) at a different location isn't scientifically sound outside of it basically being witchcraft to modern science, but it seems like a really bad idea until we figure out what the heck consciousness is, if that's even possible, and logically speaking an observer would have no idea if the consciousness had even transferred, or what that even means, or,

god it's so weird. :fou:

Yeah, it is basically witchcraft. I don't see any possibility of transmitting that much state intact, without cooling to some tiny fraction of a kelvin, which would kill you anyway :hinhin: But then, if we don't think about it because we think it'll never be possible, then someday someone actually figures out a way of doing it, I guess we'll wish we'd thought about it! :fou:

Also hello!

Apparently there is an interview where Memphis explains the significance of the tattoos on his arms. I wonder if the video is still available.

Looks like Microsoft is buying Activision Blizzard for $68.7 billion. :o

And all in cash, though I have no doubts they can afford it.

Hmm, now I'm trying to figure out whether Microsoft or Vivendi (the previous owners) have annoyed me more

In other news, it seems the Irish government has removed the two-metre distance rule today. It's got me feeling a bit anxious… I guess when I was younger I always used to be uncomfortable getting close to other people, and everything I did to overcome that has been undone by the last 22 months! :fou2:
