Old Names vs New Names

Post by Sabertooth »

I've noticed that RayWiki has the tendency to prioritize old names when it comes to titles of articles. We still have Bad Rayman, Antitoons, Livingstones, and probably others that I can't think of at the moment. Is there any reason for this? Personally I think that more recent media should trump old accounts when it comes to names and such, especially in regards to the Lividstones, whose new name makes much more sense and ties them in to the Land of the Livid Dead.

If memory serves, it's actually a policy on RayWiki, Humch is probably best suited to explain it. From what I've seen though, Wikis tend to prioritise the original names, and note alternative names within the main summary. For instance, here's the TFwiki article on Trailbreaker, whose name was changed to Trailbrazer in newer material: http://tfwiki.net/wiki/Trailbreaker_(G1)

It's a policy indeed; while I can't honestly remember all the reasons that led us to choose old names over newer ones, the underlying idea is that we have to pick a standard and be consistent with it all over the wiki. Having chosen one, switching to another would only be conceivable if it were objectively better, which I don't think is the case here. I understand your personal preference for certain names, especially given your very interesting attempts at making sense of the whole series, but the truth is, errors are as likely to occur in new names as in old ones, and a name making more sense than another often only does so based on the viewer's interpretation: you think Lividstone makes more sense because it links them to Origins' Land of the Livid Dead, I may think Livingstone makes more sense as a reference or tribute to the famous explorer.

But really, this policy changes very little for the wiki and the community. Nothing prevents you from calling Livingstones by their new name in Origins and Legends-themed articles; the only thing is that the link will point to the old name. The new name is just as valid as the old one, and this is made clear in the first sentence of the article: “Livingstones, also known as Lividstones or Explorators”. It's just that an article can only have one title, and we have to make a call.
