Dream for a new Rayman 1 map editor

(This is a cross-posting from Betilla's Gardens)

Hi again!

I know that this is yet a quite old topic, and people are now rarely interested in it. Nevertheless I have a small plan to develop a new mapper that works for any variants of Rayman 1 (that is, the original Rayman 1, Rayman Designer and Rayman Junior).

As a first step I integrated my knowledge on map and sprites to write a program that renders both the map and events: (Yes, this is a map from Rayman Junior.)

My dream is rather ambitions as I want my mapper capable of creating custom .LEV files, modifying sprites and .ETA info. But this is basically a pastime job and it may never get finished forever. Moreover, currently I am using C# platform for the development, which is very new to me. I am not sure if I would eventually come up with any fancy program...

I will try to upload it when any useful features are added. (Currently it is only capable of rendering a map...) I hope this may interest someone, or at least contributes to this community.

Cool! Similar things has been made before, such as being able to modify events and add stuff from Rayman Junior. Though I really like the idea of being able to edit the .LEV files used in the original game and to be able to edit the map and the events at the same time :D

It would be the best thing ever if you could edit the events in the mapper. Keep up the great work and I hope that this becomes reality one day. :D

If there's anything at all that I can do to help you with this project, please let me know. ;) I'd also like to hear the technical side about the .LEV and .MAP files, if that's possible. How did you discover their contents and what do they look like? :D

Thank you for all those responses!

And any help will be very appreciated as I sill don't know large portion of the data. Here I am summarizing what I have known so far (still on progress):

Adding any new insight to this would be very nice!

Hi everyone,

It has been a long time since I visited here last time.

Unfortunately my laptop died out a few months ago and I lost all the data therein, and then I have been too busy with my job to begin the project again.

Hopefully it seems that another user is building up a nice level editor, so I decided to focus on dissembling the game.

Looks very interesting. This would definitely help a lot of people trying to make fangames or changes to spice up the gameplay.

That's sad. :( At least Chacanger is making great progress with the help of the data you collected. ;)

Yes, I am surprised by the quality of the program Chacanger is making, and now looking forward to see the beta release :)

Wow, haven't posted on here for a while, probably something like 10 years ago.

Anyhow I'm still working on a level editor for Rayman 1, but as with most things, it takes about 10 times longer than expected, I did however manage to make a couple of levels out of it including this one which implements things that people have wanted in Rayman Designer for ages.

If anyones interested in trying this level let me know and I'll post it somewhere.

Wow! Excellent level design, awesome to see your making progress Chacanger. I can't wait to see a complete level from the Darkland Expansion worlds!

That level looks really cool! I love how you've taken advantage of the saucer and water elements in an interesting way. I'd love to give it a try!

Hey Chacanger, that's really awesome! Do you have any interest in working on the PS1 version as well? I decoded part of the PS1 level format a while ago, and personally, I think it'd be really neat to be able to get custom levels in there, given how much better it is on a technical level.
