Re: Pictures of yourself!!!
I'm really sorry to hear that
What awful people! Well you can be sure that I mean no offense or cruelty if I talk about Arab culture - I'm training in Arabic dance, I love the culture(s) and it's important to me to be as respectful and humble as possible - but if it is hard for you or brings back difficult memories, I won't discuss it again

Re: Pictures of yourself!!!
That is terrible, but no, you really shouldn't be offended. I can see if you where bullied for it, then it would be a sensitive subject, but if it is just mentioned (like how there was a dance named after it) and it is not intended to be offensive, then you shouldn't find it offensive. If someone named a dance after the English, I wouldn't find it offensive, even if it had nothing to do with English people.emshomar wrote:Actually I am german with arabian heritage. I consider myself German though. Dunno, in the past kids keept bullying me for my heritage, and I today I am never sure if I should feel offended or not if someone mentions my heritage.

Re: Pictures of yourself!!!
While I appreciate it Ambi, I think emsh was referring to memories of his heritage being talked about an offensive way, and so now when he hears or sees people mention his heritage, a part of him reacts as if it is being used offensively because that's what he's learned to associate it with - bigotry. (Correct me if I'm wrong, emsh.) Islamophobia and related prejudice towards people with Middle Eastern/North African background is very real. And more generally, whether or not you would be offended is a moot point.
Besides, Iraqi dance is Iraqi dance, it's not the name of a hip new groove on the street that all the cool cats are raving about.

Oh, I thought it was the nameJewish Candy wrote:Besides, Iraqi dance is Iraqi dance, it's not the name of a hip new groove on the street that all the cool cats are raving about.
Anyway my point still stands, it's a horrible thing to be reminded of such things whenever someone's heritage is mentioned, even if it is not in an offensive way. I think it would be best to realise that mention of an ethnicity, even in a joke, shouldn't automatically be linked with offence just because of bad memories, and should instead be something of pride.
I don't know if it's "socially correct" of me to think this way, but if something personal is effecting someone negatively, some people would say to leave them to sort it out themselves, but I think it would be best to help them sort it out and forget about it (that's what I would want at least).

I wasn't implying it was socially incorrect to hold your view, if anything it's the social norm!
No, heritage shouldn't be linked with bad memories, but as far as emsh has explained it IS for him at the moment, and that's not something people can automatically switch off. So what I mean is that, yes, this issue is for emsh to deal with, but that doesn't mean I shouldn't take into account where he's at. Hence my offer to not talk about this anymore: if he told me that that would be helpful - and he would know better than either of us - then I would stop. If he told me "nah Candish that's cool, ur cool and I love you, keep on chugging" then I would feel free to continue talkin' bout it if and when I wished. I don't know if I'm being clear...

I'm sorry that I have accused such a discussion ._.
I don't know, I just was just trying to make myself clear. It's just I barely even know you and your real intentions.

I know, I just meant it's best to help anyone with a problem like that, I didn't quite pick up the fact that he may be asking for people to stop talking about itJewish Candy wrote:I wasn't implying it was socially incorrect to hold your view
Re: Pictures of yourself!!!
The fact that anyone could hate anyone because of heritage is INSANE. We are all people. There are both good and bad people in every part of the world and every religion.

xD
I thought
DAT WAZ
DE JOAKE
I think incognito is starting to look like a mix between Cyclops, Thomas Bengalter and some ancient cyborg-Titan cross-over of Greek mythology meets sci-fi 1960s film.

Is it just me, or does the Rayman 1 magician look like Shroobie ;O
Re: Pictures of yourself!!!
Looks like the robot from The Day the Earth Stood Still, the 1951 version. I actually learnt this movie was the original one, the one released in 2008 being a remake...kinda.

Too bad that's a reference which people wont get!
Re: Pictures of yourself!!!
If you did watch the 2008 one, you will probably recognize heavy similarities and quickly find it out, though.rolesfamily wrote:Too bad that's a reference which people wont get!
