^ can't guess the meaning of the word from the Greek? Ah, no, ^ is a Latinist, not a Hellenian. Oligo - little; poly - many. Polysaccharide - many sugars, a sugar compound with a lot of 'sugary subunits'. Oligosaccharide - little/few sugars, a sugar compound with only a few, say two or three, 'sugary units'. Sucrose is an oligosaccharide. Cellulose is a polysaccharide. Compare oligarchy and matrarchy, oligopoly and monopoly.
