Isn't that because you reach a point where you've broken the starch into glucose?

I was actually replying primarily to emsh's declaration of bedtime (and not the indirect context :P), people should know that saying goodnight is integral to my posting style.

How long has it been since you quit? Your body will need time to adjust. A lot of time. I once heard it could be upwards of two weeks per cigarette that your lungs need in order to recover to their full potential once more. I, however, have no idea on the medical validity of that claim. :P
Anyway - yeah - it'll be a while until you're back up to scratch.

@ shroob, haven't smoked this year yet, and tbh I never really noticed any negative effects when I was smoking, even when I occasionally smoked heavily I didn't feel addicted. I suppose I'm more annoyed that I might be giving it up for no reason... I expected to be like "ooooh that's what not smoking feels like" but it's the same :/

Not this year yet as in not since December 2014? It will take longer than that before you notice any difference. The tar in cigarettes does some pretty nasty stuff to your lungs. But I can only give you second-hand accounts from people who have told me about their experience in quitting smoking. In the end, they were very happy with it. Some of them felt a lot fitter quite quickly; others were just happy they weren't clogging up their airways with soot anymore.

And if none of that does anything for you, how about this: cigarettes aren't cheap - you're saving yourself a big buck quitting!

(You may be able to tell I have a certain hostility against smoking. It's not disrespect per se. It's simply disappointment in people actively killing themselves for no real good reason.)
