Picture City in general was that way I feel, like it was just some random spike in difficulty due to a lack of playtesting

I have to say, Caddicarus pretty summed up why this whole bossfight was a pain in the ass for me. Although the one difference for me was that I always died at running section
Because I didn't know that you had to duck in order to not get hit by Space Mama's feet which come out of nowhere. And then I got stuck on this boss for like 3 years.

Yay.

That's kind of what I don't understand though, if there's something scanning horizontally across the screen at head-height, why would you not duck :?: like are you retarded :?:

Also, you don't have to be nearly as precise as he's making it out to be in the crawling pots section. You can see in his first take he actually overshot it and he had to slow down.

Also, no, you don't have to hit the knob on the washing machine, you just have to hit the washing machine.

I will give him that the head is annoyingly precise to hit and that the double-shot thing at the end is a total surprise (which can result in many a death, fair enough), but other than that, the boss is the literal opposite of random. Most of the other shit he's complaining about is very normal video game stuff, such as her shooting at three different heights during the washing machine section, which you also have probably around a second of look-ahead time between when the roller's moved into position and when you have to jump/duck to avoid it.

I get the feeling he really likes to dramaticise his Rayman 1 experience. It looked like he was purposely bullshitting some of the video to make it look more unfair than it actually is to pander to the people who have PTSD from a considerably difficult bossfight.

To be honest, I always thought Rayman 1 was a really nice and intricate game. It's great to look at and fun to play. The difficulty spike is due in part to it not being playtested making this game better suited for people who like being challenged, not so much casual scene.

The Wiki for "Mr. Stone's Peaks" is incomplete for the Jaguar version; the map is missing a cage for the Jaguar version (because the Jaguar version is missing the rope level).

I'm having trouble signing up for the Wiki and I'm not sure if I'm allowed to update/add maps even if I logged in. How should I solve this?

You don’t need to sign up on the wiki separately. Use your forum account to log in.

There were never any Jaguar maps released, which is why there's none for this level. You can instead edit the wiki (without logging in if you want to) and write about the new cage placement.

I like how menacingly hard Picture City is. It's brutal, and it's made me very frustrated at times, but all the more satisfied with myself when I finally beat it. That's good game design in my eyes, not "a lack of playtesting" as you put it.

However, what I don't understand exactly is why Picture City (at least, to me) seems so much harder than the rest of the levels that follow ('cept you, Eat at Joe's Fish Sequence FUCK). It would've made more sense in my view that levels got progressively harder, but I do perceive – like you – more of a "spike" than a linearly (or otherwise) increasing trend.
This to me is a little odd. I'll grant you that.

Now tell me Ad, does Space Mama scroll towards you in this part or does she pop up out of nowhere?

Don't get me wrong, I still like Rayman 1. It's the first game I've ever played. Heck, I even played through it again a few months ago. It's just Space Mama that I have really,
-> REALLY <- bad memories with because that damn boss took me ~2 years to beat, because I was too dumb to duck. I can beat her without getting hit now, but fuck man...

well it's a pattern so....... it's still kind of predictable?

Regardless, that's a perfect example of something where, if you get hit the very first time you do it because you're too dumb to duck, you should never get hit there again.

Fair enough I suppose

That may be the case with the Disc based versions but I'm not entirely sure that's the case for the Jaguar version, yesterday I was watching the Jaguar opening sequence (the part where Rayman pieces himself together) in both PAL and NTSC modes to see how the sequence differs because of the timing difference and I noticed that in PAL mode the Rayman logo drops onto the screen with the SFX just as the opening theme is about to loop which artistically speaking actually makes alot more sense whereas in NTSC mode the logo and SFX appear way too soon in the song.

PAL Speed (And before you point it out I am fully aware this video was recorded from an emulator with buggy sound, unfortunately I haven't been able to find any recordings from an actual PAL Jaguar system as of this time so I had to make due with the only PAL Jaguar intro video I could find):

I always found Rayman 1 for the PS1, the hardest game in history. Without cheats! Of course.
I got to Eat At Joe's, and never beat it, because of that stupid fish. You know, the balloon part. I thought it was unbeatable. Who agrees?

That part is really hard no doubt about that but it is beatable, if you still have trouble on that stage you can crouch on the balloons and the fish will always jump over you.

We had a discussion about this before and I think we came to the conclusion that it's not quite that simple.
