Really have to say I'm confused with the direction they're going with on Sonic Forces with what I've seen thus far.

I assumed it would be a post-apocalyptic type game from the first trailer, with the city being ruins and eggman ruling. But this classic gameplay seems to show green hill (for like the thousandth time) still intact. So is it still going for a Generations thing where you visit past levels? Is that something exclusive to classic Sonic? Are the destructive type levels part of Modern Sonic's? This game has just been strange for me so far.

At least the gameplay looks polished though, other then that there's nothing negative I can add to this that wasn't already.

Yeah...I have to admit, while I don't mind Classic being Sonic Forces, I think Sonic Team need to be careful. The whole callback thing was Generation's gimmick, and given how they've given the impression that Forces isn't meant to be Generations 2, stuff like this comes across as contradictory.

We sure do know that a part of the sonic fanbase is going to adore this title!

Ooh, Sonic OC just got official.

I'm not too fussed, though looking at the gameplay, it looks like a missed opportunity to make Tails or Knuckles playable characters. The gameplay's focus on gadgets fits Tails, while the acrobatics would work with Knuckles.

EDIT: Gameplay:

Oh well, there's still the option to make Garfield. A fat cat running at the speed of light would be kind of comical.
This video just never loses it's charm.

If the game's still gonna be fun I will not mind this feature, it is a little disappointing to me though.

This is actually legitimately hilarious, I don't mind it one bit, but deviantart will certainly have a field day with this one.

On the brightside at least we don't have to worry about the 3rd gameplay style being shit, since it seems very similar to modern and classic Sonic.

Indeed, I read into it further, and apparently, the character options you choose affect aspects of the gameplay.
Bear — Blows away enemies with a homing attack
Bird — Flies high with double jump abilities
Cat — Keeps one ring after being hit
Dog — Restarts with five rings after the player dies
Hedgehog — Collects rings when getting damaged
Rabbit — Has longer invincible time after receiving damage
Wolf — Automatically draws in rings when near them

On the park avenue video towards the end (0:29-ish) anyone notice the singing? Seems very different from what we can expect from a Sonic game, but I like it. Wanna hear more of it.

I haven't looked too much into Forces but the custom hero thing is honestly the best idea they've had given how much that side of the fanbase would eat that up. Thinking about it though it would be cool if they topped off custom heroes with custom levels for the true roleplaying experience, which i'm all unironically for provided it does end up being good.

With the more rock-oriented main theme and now stage themes with lyrics, I wonder if this is their way of giving a nod to the Dreamcast era?

Well I did see in an interview that they wanted the story to be more entertaining like the adventure titles, however it's the same writing team from Colors-Lost world so I doubt it'll be radicaly different from recent titles in terms of tone.

So apparently someone managed to leak a image of one of the new zones in Sonic Mania, with very interesting visuals if you'd ask me, I don't think we've ever seen an almost cathedral-like area in the earlier installments of the franchise:
