Re: Rayman 3 scores
So if I'm right, does that mean that for you to have 121000, you basically had to get that all in a combo from under 100000?

Re: Rayman 3 scores
Yeah, basically. Hmmm....it sounds like it will be hard for me to try and land on exactly 99, 999 points though i could do it
Re: Rayman 3 scores
Small correction: the Scoring doesn't stop after 100.000, but 99.999. Just one point difference, but that can already make a huge difference if you forget about it.
I think it's got something to do with the counter only having 5 digits. The game can't handle 6-digit-numbers and thus stops at 99.999. That's just a theory though, you'd have to look at the code to see what's actually going on.
The only exception to this is taking items with a Powersuit. As you know, Powersuits give you x2 the points. For some reason, the game "disregards" the x2 when approaching the limit and instead just looks at the x1 value.
Examples for everything said above:
Say you're at 98.500 Point and take a Green Gem. Since 98.500 + 1.500 = 100.000, you wouldn't get any Points for the Green Gem because 100.000 is higher than the 99.999 barrier, even if just by 1 Point.
Now, if you were at 98.499 Points, you would still get +1.500 and land on exactly 99.999.
And here's where things get crazy: If you're at 98.499 and you take a Green Gem for 3.000 Points with a Powersuit, you'd normally not be able to get these Points because it would put you over 99.999. However, like I said, the game only looks at the single value of the Green Gem (1.500), and 98.499 + 1.500 = 99.999 and that's within the limit. So the game would allow you to score up to 98.499 + 3.000 = 101.499 in this special case.
For instance, the 122.619 in LOTLD is reached by collecting a Green Gem with a Powersuit so you're at 101.499 Points like above, and then the Combo is worth 21.120 Points which puts you at 101.499 + 21.120 = 122.619 Points.
This is probably a lot to take in at once, so take your time to grasp these things as you move along.
Also, congratulations on your first time passing 100k in a level, good job!

Exactly. If you want to get 121000, you would need to get to 99.999 Points with 21.001 Points on the Combo-Counter.Steo wrote: So if I'm right, does that mean that for you to have 121000, you basically had to get that all in a combo from under 100000?

Thanks MazMaz wrote:Also, congratulations on your first time passing 100k in a level, good job!
I understand how it works now, basically as soon as the counter hits 99999+, whatever your combo is when it hits that number is just added and the game stops counting. I have 105585 on LOTLD now
I know it still can be better, but I think that's high enough for now that I should move on to another level for the time being. Maybe CF because I only have 49000 in that level.

Yup, once the last combo stops, you can't score any more, no matter what you do. Not that I've ever experienced it myself of course.
Well, congrats to you both!

Re: Rayman 3 scores
I have no idea if you are thanking me too or not...
Well I might as well give Rayman 3 a run again and finish the rest of my current save file. I'm running it blind right now, so these are my current scores. They're not the best, but they're not bad either.
FC: 30260 (meh)
CF: 82381 (can improve this score)
BOM: 44877 (aaaahhh!!)
TLOTLD: 100505 (ok, i guess)
TDOTK: 72249 (feck you knaaren!!)
TLS: 34570 (definitely can be better)
Have a score of around 400-500K, though I'm still on TSBTC so can't give a complete score yet. I guess they're not bad for a raw playthrough without looking through any of the tips that Maz or the other top scorers have put on the wiki. And considering it's been quite a few years since playing. I wonder how much better my score will be after I take the tips into account and use them in my playthrough..

That was my first time experiencing it. I just wanted to break 90000 and thought nice I'm gonna do it. Then when I looked at MandM81's video, it turned out there was another secret room. I then knew I could break 100000
I'll admit I got extremely excited about it
I'm still over the moon that I could do that, but now I need to improve on other levels. I just had to start somewhere

@Steo and The Jonster:
Just in case you're interested, there's even another exception, which allows you to surpass the 100k border: Maybe you know that killing a Hoodlum with one hit usually gives you 30 extra points (or 60 with a powerup). The 100k rule doesn't apply to this points either. For instance when you are at 99899 and you kill a Hoodblaster with one hit, then you'll get the usual 100 points (-> 99999) and additional 30 points, leading to 100029 points. It's not really important, but if you want to see it, here's an older video showing this "glitch" (~ 2:20).
Also, congratulations on your scores!
Nice to have you both here!
As for the HoF, I don't think that it provides a good place for a completely fair competition anyway. I mean especially the platform differences make it basically impossible to compare different scores on different platforms. Even when looking just at PC-players there are some noticeable differences, like varying game speeds or performances, hence the HoF can just make some vague qualitative statements. I don't want to say that the HoF is obsolete or anything, I just think that revealing the combo in SBTC wouldn't change anything regarding this, especially since, as already mentioned, it even might be platform-dependent.
Apart from that I also doubt that MandM would be willing to reveal his findings. Since the discussion both sides have attacked each other, worsening the atmosphere between the parties, and he has been repeatedly pushed into revealing the combo, which imo might be the reason why he still hasn't done this. I mean, when someone insults me (regardless of whether it's justified or not), and then demands sth. from me, then I probably wouldn't comply either ...but maybe I completely misinterpret this.
However, just so you know, this is definitely no criticism on you or anyone else here whatsoever; I think all that was simply "bad luck", no one wanted it to happen.
What I want to achieve with this is to convince you to somewhat "accept" the SBTC-thing by now and not let it ruin the game for you.
Once MandM comes back, I think I'll ask him about his find at some point, since I'm curious about it as well, but if it doesn't yield a result, then I'll just leave it at that. I can't force him to do so, but I hope he'll be accommodating.
1.) When you run off a ledge and, just before you fall down, convert a black Lum, then the animation will get cancelled, which saves you quite some time. In fact, I'm actually trying to use it in HH3 for the final combo: After killing the Hoodboom I want to use the trick to give me some extra time for the following superjump. It requires some good timing, but it works.
2.) When you land after a jump, then usually you're not running at max speed afterwards, but you have to accelerate first. However, when you press one of the arrow keys just as you land you'll reach max speed right away. E.g. you jump forward, and then as soon as you touch the ground press right. Actually it even appears to me as if you get an extra boost doing that, but that's probably just an illusion.

Good to know! It's just that your choice of words made it sound to me as if you'd intend to quit playing R3, my bad! I hope I misunderstood Maz' "lay off Rayman 3" as well.Cut wrote:See, that is so wrong because I actually don't want to quit R3.
I think that maybe you're making a too big deal out of it. Sure it fundamentally quite sucks that things are beeing kept secret, and just as you I'm also interested in how the 133k are possible. But after all it's just one part out of 48. There are dozens of other unknown or untested things. We'd do well to focus on these, instead of on the single improvement in SBTC, which btw probably isn't anything too spectacular anyways. I mean I doubt that he found an unknown secret place or a very clever combo or the like, as there are hardly any possibilities for that in the first place. Probably it's just a spot for (a bunch of) additional kickflips, which even might be platform dependent.Cut wrote:But maximizing also means for example finding/revealing the SBTC-stuff and if that's not possible due to someone's I almost said something offensive scorn for this glitch then I happily go back to at least keeping it out of the Hall of Fame. As long as we don't resolve our issues for good, the Hall of Fame stays being an utter joke anyway, and it certainly deserves better (for me it's a miracle that it even made it over here).

Well, even though I might not convey the impression, basically I'd really like to take part in your Skype-sessions. It's just that I don't see any hope for me to overcome my shyness in this respect; I'm just not made for face-to-face-talks especially via such means, which really sucks, but I just can't help it.Cut wrote:You two guys prefer this forum as your medium, I preferred hanging out with some people on Skype, being able to talk about stuff momentarily and also throwing in some causal talk as well as looking into other games together. This actually remembers me on two things I've discovered not too long ago. Maybe you know about it already, but it's still worth mentioning:Maz wrote:- Jumping extends Rayman's hurtbox. If you fall perfectly into a Gem, you can take it from farther away than if you'd just run into it and thus get a tad bit more time to continue a Combo with the next item.
- Rolling would be the fastest method of moving forward if it weren't for the endlag. If you have to jump somewhere, you can be just the slightest bit quicker if you roll towards that place and then cancel the roll mid-jump.

Re: Rayman 3 scores
Not bad, but there's still room for improvements.
A tip I can give you is to focus more on the green gems. Usually it's better to succeed in one green gem combo and then fail at 5 smaller combos, than the other way round. The point is that a green gem can be worth up to 12000 points in total, while most other items are worth just a few hundred points on average. For example in the Desert of the Knaaren you can get over 70k points from the green gems alone!
So, always try to take green gems with a powerup, and if possible take some items before (with a powerup optimally 10-14 items, without a powerup optimally 20 items or more).
Congrats on your improvements btw.!

I never commented on this either, but I'm glad to hear this from you too! Personally I would never quit playing Rayman 3, maybe put it off for awhile to clear the air. You're definitely right about that. For example.. about the video on CF you posted above, I've noted that how many there are that appear are quite inconsistent. In the GC version, it's 26. In the HD version, it's 24. In the PC version, it's 25. I can't say I blame you on that respect, since I used to be quite an introvert and was just too shy to even go out to a party with people who were friends with family, as long as a few years back. It takes a lot of determination and effort just to break that barrier, in my opinion.1234 wrote:It's just that I don't see any hope for me to overcome my shyness in this respect; I'm just not made for face-to-face-talks especially via such means, which really sucks, but I just can't help it.

Oh that reminds me...at what point when I start comboing do the points in the combo meter double? My bad if it doesn't make sense, but I think at some point when collecting gems that one yellow gem eventually becomes 20, one red gem becomes 60, etc.. I've been kinda curious about this for awhile now since I always used to just randomly collect gems in no particular order (with the exception of the green ones of course)
I know I can do better with my scores, I just need to get back to practicing again like i used to as a kid.

I'm really interested in improving my scores now since I was able to break 100000. I honestly didn't think I'd be good enough but I have the determination to do it I guess
I'm not expecting to be the best, in fact I'll never be as good as you guys or even close, but I'm not trying to complete against anyone really, I'm just doing it for the fun of it to see how well I can score.
I still have a lot to learn about Rayman 3, but the good thing is I'm constantly learning and improving at it. I picked up this game for the first time I think it was January, so I'm happy that I managed to improve that quickly considering I haven't even played it much. I've only given it a week here and there.
I'm also used to sucking at every game I play apart from 2D games (which I'm good at because I'm good with timing) with the exception of Crash Bandicoot / Mario, but I might be able to add Rayman to the list of 3D games I don't suck at now
Re: Rayman 3 scores
Yes, this is a well-known glitch, since it infuriated quite a few players (including myselfThe Jonster wrote:You're definitely right about that. Here's an explanation from the Wiki article about the scoring system. I hope it helps. The Jonster wrote:Oh that reminds me...at what point when I start comboing do the points in the combo meter double? I've been kinda curious about this for awhile now since I always used to just randomly collect gems in no particular order (with the exception of the green ones of course)
The combo system is structured in the following way. The objects in a combo are gathered in groups of five and will be assigned combo points as follows:
Objects 1 – 5: Objects 2 – 5 will have their points added to the combo counter.
Objects 6 – 10: These objects will have their points doubled and added to the combo counter.
Objects 11 – 15: These objects will have their points tripled and added to the combo counter.
Objects 16 – 20: These objects will have their points quadrupled and added to the combo counter.
Objects: 21 – : These objects will have their points quintupled and added to the combo counter.
In order to maximize the score under these rules it is a good strategy to save objects with high points as late in the combo as possible and start the combo with low points objects like yellow gems for example.
That's the spirit!Steo wrote:I'm not expecting to be the best, in fact I'll never be as good as you guys or even close, but I'm not trying to complete against anyone really, I'm just doing it for the fun of it to see how well I can score.
Also, you can never know how far you'll get. I never expected to get the score I have right now either. It's probably just a matter of patience and persistency.

Re: Rayman 3 scores
Oooh so it wasn't based on the platform, but just more luck? I never even knew it was a glitch until somebody called me out on it in one of my hosting questions and it was explained to me when I asked. I can now imagine how many times I'm going to be restarting the game for this and the boss, and find this as infuriating as the green gem in the slopes of TSBTC3 and trying to get that freaking Hoodblaster to not get himself killed in the BOM3.1234 wrote:Yes, this is a well-known glitch, since it infuriated quite a few players (including myselfThe Jonster wrote:You're definitely right about that. As far as I know this even isn't platform dependent, but rather a matter of luck. Sometimes there appear 25, sometimes only 24, and rarely 26. When I played CF I had to restart dozens of times until finally 26 Hoodblasters appeared.

Haha, I clearly must have not read through the article fully, I was looking at the wiki article myself earlier for the green gem glitch!1234 wrote:Here's an explanation from the Wiki article about the scoring system. I hope it helps. The Jonster wrote:Oh that reminds me...at what point when I start comboing do the points in the combo meter double? My bad if it doesn't make sense, but I think at some point when collecting gems that one yellow gem eventually becomes 20, one red gem becomes 60, etc.. I've been kinda curious about this for awhile now since I always used to just randomly collect gems in no particular order (with the exception of the green ones of course)
That's true. I never really expected to make 500000 as a kid when I first made that effort as a kid back in....I think 2005-6? I think after this blind playthrough without looking up hint and tips from you guys I think I can reach at least 600000+ by the end. I definitely believe that someday I can make a good enough score to be high up there in the HOF, just need the large amount of patience, luck and persistency that you all had when you first went for those scores. But as Steo said before, i'm not trying to compete either, just have a good time playing and to continue improving in my skills in this game. I'm already pretty decent in this game in particular, but i can be better if i try to discover new ways like you all have to improve my overall score, if there's anything else to find. Which reminds me...1234 wrote:That's the spirit!Steo wrote:I'm not expecting to be the best, in fact I'll never be as good as you guys or even close, but I'm not trying to complete against anyone really, I'm just doing it for the fun of it to see how well I can score.![]()
Also, you can never know how far you'll get. I never expected to get the score I have right now either. It's probably just a matter of patience and persistency.
If only my laptops didn't need fixing, I might be able to lend a hand with this every now and then as long as I'm not too busy. Recently I think I've found the urge to want to discover more secrets/glitches in games since that plum video I published for RR a while back.Maz wrote:Even putting aside "game-breaking" Glitches, there's regular movement options like these which have not been implemented into our Scoring at all (though I don't know if there's any places where those 2 in particular would be of any use). That's the worst part about all of this. There's so many things left to test out, just noone willing to put in the effort anymore.Cut wrote: There's only so much 2 people can do, and if we still were 7 people (or heck, there's been plenty more of people prior to 2013) or managed to "link" with the speedrunning community (except for the times when RibShark showed some sympathy for the sad clowns that we are), we'd probably be steamrolling the fuck out of this game.
Tl;dr: if anyone is willing to get into the game again and make new discoveries please hit me up. I'm dying to find the drive to be serious about this game again. It's not even half the fun to do it alone.
Re: Rayman 3 scores
Yeah basically I love playing Rayman and I want to try get good score. Also if I make any new discoveries I'll share them but I doubt I'll find out anything someone else doesn't already know at this stage.
Even if I do get good scores and share them, I won't be sharing them as if to say "look I'm better than you" but more of an "I managed to achieve this score" kind of thing.
I think I'll start trying out Clearleaf Forest, but I'm expecting to do pretty bad a few times before I finally get the hang of it

Re: Rayman 3 scores
although i have gone entirely into hibernation mode when it comes to touching the game, it still amazes me to see this thread filled with activity
i also feel the need to adress some things (and probably repeat some aforementioned points):
the nostalgic personality i am, i can scarcely refrain from checking this place once in a while, funny how my telepathic senses seemed to tingle and led me to visiting this place on such a memorable day after weeks of absence. like cut, private/business life has provided me some obstacles, furthermore i have never even once considered loading up the game either in 2018.
however, this game and the people that are attached to it have left a strong imprint on me. even assuming i would never play it again, it would most likely still remain my favourite game ever and i will always cherish the memories that are associated with rayman 3.
i was and still am a very ambitious person and love engaging in competition, but the most pivotal part about r3 was the capability to share my experiences and successes with people or simply discuss about the game (like in the skype-conferences or in this topic).
obviously, it therefore hurts me to see that the community is still kind of divided and that im interacting way less than i used to in this environment. nowadays i can barely grasp the dimension that the feud about the hof/ipg assumed in 2013/2014.
with the myriad of factors influencing or mitigating the performance of players (differences regarding working speed of the game, jumping power, durability of powder-cans, workability of glitches) it has always been a challenge to compare the scores holistically anyway.
i would really advocate a clean slate and see us all unified, since we all share a similar interest, the admiration for this game. what do we have to lose?
as for my personal sight about the game: the pcm-glitch has surpassed a certain threshold which made the game feel severely less cozy for me. it frankly just doesn't feel right for me to see this kind of glitch happening, nor can i muster the sufficient fine-motor skills to handle it (thats what my previous attempts suggest).
even zooming in on matuvus while having the ipg triggered was a ridiculously horrid task for me and required ginormous practice.
however, i don't condemn anybody who makes use of this method in order to improve their score, as i fully acknowledge it requires both skill and creativity to make something out of it.
additionally, i feel like i missed out on too many discoveries/techniques and catching up on all that stuff would take an eternity.
henceforth i'm not sure if i will attempt to beat someone's/my personal best in a world or even go for place 1 in hof. however, i can at least imagine myself just casually playing the game, simply trying out own or other combo ideas and deriving pleasure from that. or participate in streams/conversations with others like earlier
maz and 1234, would be lovely to see you partake in those, especially since you guys have always tried to hold the activity high in the utmost way possible.
with constantly marvelous input, even in the times of great r3-depression.
nice to see some fresh blood with steo and the jonster, keep the spirit up guys, you make rpc great again. i'll follow your progress and assist you if you are still devoid of some cages or similar stuff

Great giant leaps to get "gooder" scoresThe Jonster wrote:Just remember - baby steps.
Nah I'm sure we'll get "better" scores eventually with practice. I'll see how CF goes for me next
Thanks, I'll try and I'll see how much I can improve at the game. I don't ever want a feud to break out because at the end of the day we're all interested in the same game and we should share that interestMountain Goat wrote:nice to see some fresh blood with steo and the jonster, keep the spirit up guys, you make rpc great again. i'll follow your progress and assist you if you are still devoid of some cages or similar stuff
I also have the 60 cages but my score is currently only 460000, so lots of improvement needed on other levels.
PS It's nice for me to be actually posting in the Rayman section for a change
