Re: Rayman 2

Post by Steo »

I don't mind the whole exiting the level manually thing either, kind of odd that the Dreamcast just auto exits, though it's not too major really.

When I figured out Rayman 3 on Xbox, it was all just changing codes until eventually the sides of the screen were no longer cut, but judging by how much worse the cutting is on Rayman 2 (the fact that even textures are cut) it's probably a bigger job than changing a hex value. I'd like to be wrong though.

Edit: Wow, so it turns out the Dreamcast version is also slowed down if you set it to 50Hz. I hadn't noticed it before, but it's a lot slower now that I tried it again after playing the game a lot.

EDIT 2: I'll take the plum challenge and raise you a plum.

I managed to do it again and get it on video. :P

By the way, I didn't actually figure this out, I was just going on what Plum did last year basically for the fun of it. :)

I bet if you done this on 3DS it would just crash or something.

This is PC, you can get by the wall if you throw the plum right at the very edge.

I have to actually try the Dreamcast version too though now that you mention it.

It seems to be the same on Dreamcast. I don't have the capture card set up at the moment, so this terrible picture will have to do. :P

Ah yes, there were steps to jump on instead of a web. I think I've seen that difference mentioned before. Tbh a web in the Guardian's chamber doesn't really make sense – in that case couldn't a spider get in there and get the mask?

Yeah some of the changes I don't really understand. I just completed the PC version about an hour ago and some changes are better on Dreamcast, while at the same time some were just not needed.

The platforms on Tomb Of The Ancients move a lot faster on PC too.

Edit: It's nothing compared to Revolution, but I get that some changes don't make sense. I still think Dreamcast is my favourite version.

I like the dreamcast version mainly because of the environmental background additions to the levels to give the game more detail like the jumping frogs and the small But visible pirahnas in water and the graphical differences.

Wasn't the dreamcast version with the butterflies as well? The ones at the first climbable walls, after you speak with the baby globoxes. And they all fly away when you run into them. That part looked gorgeus as hell.

Yeah it has those, it looks really nice. Since I actually own the game and the Dreamcast though, I just really love playing that version. I'm pretty sure it's the only version of Rayman 2 to support 16:9, Revolution doesn't even natively support it.

I'm just wondering does anyone know that you can helicopter in a sliding section? I just found out there on The Sanctuary Of Stone And Fire as I got to the sliding section on Dreamcast that if you're moving slow enough, you can use the helicopter. You can keep tapping the jump button and hold down to slow down and then just keep using the helicopter to get to the bottom of the sliding section. It's not necessary, but it could help people that struggle to collect Lums on sliding sections. You can even get back up the hill again if you hold strafe and keep jumping backwards and using the helicopter (assuming you're facing towards the downhill slope). At the steeper slopes you can just hold the strafe button and keep jumping and and using the helicopter towards the wall while moving uphill, it works best if you're facing to the side or downhill rather than facing uphill.

It's probably easier to just fall off the edge on purpose and collect Lums on the next try, but it's just the fact that you can actually do this.

At least we've gotten around that with a simple fix, plus with GSM we can allow the console to output a nice 1080i signal into the OSSC for a clean picture on our systems.

Also another nifty thing is I can run Rayman 2 off my storage server onto the PS2 now.

Yeah it looks pretty nice in 1080i since you get a sharp picture rather than a blurry disaster. Now I just need to get myself an official network adapter to run games through SMB myself. :P

Plus Revolution looks pretty nice in 16:9. :)

Indeed, while I know not every single game will work with that sort of output on the PS2, I'm certainly glad that this game does. Though yeah, you should totally get the official adapter.

So far I've had the best luck letting Windows Server handle my SMB share, compared to a linux distribution running Samba for the SMB share. Games would come up on the list just fine, and load, but if they don't continuously keep pulling data and end up idling for a very short time frame... the connection dies and the game freezes when it tries to load data again. Sadly I've not had any luck with any particular distro I tried, let alone any various settings.

Windows simply just works, but oh well. Everything's still served from my storage server in the end.

I've went and ordered the official network adapter, let's see how I do with trying to set up SMB once it arrives. ;)

Either way, FTPing games to the HDD will still be so much faster and easier than what I have to do now. :P

Has anyone tried to reach the Tomb of the Ancients secret in the PS2 version? I see the hole is still up there even if there’s no code to make the box appear. If we could get there with a levitation/moonjump code, I wonder if there’d still be anything to see?

Interestingly I've never thought about accessing the area in Revolution because I knew the Lum was in the chest instead. Oddly enough I've been messing about with OPL on my PS2 which I used a cheat on to make the game wide-screen. Maybe there's a code that could help us to access the area.

I think he's talking about the secret area next to the exit with the tunnel and the outside view, not the area in the first part where the 1000th lum used to be.

He's talking about the secret room just before the Clark room, yes.

Well, it's possible to get in there with glitchy jumps, and there's nothing special in there (it's basically the same as the other versions). Though while you're jumping, the way the scenery decorations look against the wall can be quite scary. Lagrogne did it and you can see what I mean:

That’s cool. It’s odd that they left the big red guy there but the Teensie and baby Globoxes are gone.

I would love to know the full story behind that area from the developers, and if that really is Clark, what his early design looked like.
