1. The Background music never, ever changes when you come across R1 enemies unlike most R2 and R3 enemies.
2. All the R1 enemies are limbless. The R2 and R3 enemies are not.
3. Some R1 enemies go flying in the air after you defeat them. None of the R2 and R3 enemies do.
4. The R1 enemies are in 2D and the R2 and R3 enemies are not.
5. Some enemies from R3 have a life display. Most enemies in R2 do. None of the R1 enemies do apart from bosses.

R2 and R3 enemies do not reappear when you kill them, walk away, and come back. R1 enemies, on the other hand, do.

As for the answer, spiraldoor can't be wrong, according to sfn's last post. You should take it easy, FAB. It's just a game, sometimes you know the answer but someone else is quicker than you: is that really worth whining?
