The Vigilante. He was going to pick off a Mafia member but changed his mind and killed a villager instead, as well as himself out of shame. This was on the same night as Serza's mistake; if that had both stuck with their original plan the Village would have taken a Mafia and lost no-one, instead of losing two of their own.
Oh yeah, that was all because one of the villagers stayed completely inactive for some reason, which caught my suspicions. Thankfully this will lead to godkilling now, so something like this shouldn't happen again. :)

But yeah, guess I have to admit that the defeat of the village was mainly my fault.

So, do you guys feel like waiting for a new themed mafia or would you rather play an unthemed game immediately?

Ktulu / Cooloo - or what would Mafia be if it would be crazy

Post by stan423321 »

Hello there, your not-so-favourite Stan here. I'm here with yet another game! It's not mine, though. It is slowly spreading in Poland, but I thought it would be nice to have a game of it as a replacement of RPC Mafia... Anyway, I need your help, the game is in Polish and I wish for your help regarding climate and common sense (I can make grammar errors or something).
The game has a lot of fanfic, "additions" and "variants" which I won't translate at first (more specifically, I will translate one variant I find the best), and is playable with relatively big number of people (I can host a game with 10-30 players, host is not a player). It is based on Mafia. Polish users shall search for "ktulu" if they are interested, however this had potential to annoy Lovecraft and still was quite useless, so I will refer to it as Cooloo.
Rules are long, but as long as I or someone understanding them really well will host, it is not a problem. I need grammar check though.

Base
Cooloo, like Mafia, is split between nights and days. Game is set in Not So Wild West's Bum Boom City's Town Hall (...). Unlike Mafia, there are always at least 3 fractions. The typical base fractions are Citizens, Bandits, and Indians (American). There are a lot of extra fractions, like Aliens, Gods, Niggers (though the word is not offensive in Polish), I will however begin with the base ones and Aliens, as they are most traditional.
The most prominent feature of the game is statuette/figurine. Basically someone has it.
(Good) Citizens basically win as they get the statuette. Unlike other fractions they do not know each other.
Bandits win if they have statuette at the dawn of day after set amount of nights.
Indians win if they will kill everyone else. They find figurine their god's picture so with it they kill others faster.
Aliens win if they have the figurine, which happens to be their antenna, for 3 nights.
Every person has some specific features. More on this later.
Telling others your "identity" in a way they know for sure you are not lying (IRL: showing others your character card) is usually prohibited.

Day
The players basically talk etc. They may also challenge other player to a duel. If other player agrees or sheriff (one of citizens) is dead, they speak their speeches, then other players vote which of them should die. Special rules may apply, number of duels per day is limited. If one with figurine dies during day Citizens win.
At the end of day, players vote which players shall be checked for having figurine after optionally eliminating some obviously not-to-be-checked people even from voting. Number of people checked is limited. Then, players vote whether they would like to hang one of the people checked and which one. In case of games with many players, they sometimes have option of checking identity of one of checked.
Each voting becomes non-secret after it. That is, after a voting, players get to know who voted how. You have to vote in all votings but duel ones.

Night
Following a very monotonous sequence, host allows specific characters and fractions to use their abilities. Zero night is significantly different.
Killers get figurine if killed person had it.

Citizens
They do not know each other, so they do not have common actions.
Sheriff: Allows other people to disagree on duels. Each night including zero night he puts a person in jail. That person can't be killed or poisoned. Also, if that person had figurine, he gets it; as he survives the night with it, Citizens win. Everybody knows who's in jail in usual variant.
Bitch (?) (whore?): Selects customer (player) at zero night. She gets to know customer's character, customer gets to know who's the bitch.
Good gunslinger (good gunman?): Wins duels despite the voting, unless facing bad gunslinger.
Parson: Each night, including zero one, gets to know one person's fraction (but not exact character).
Judge: Just after duel, may decide to change the hall's decision once. Everybody gets to know he's the judge.
Mayor: Just after hanging voting, may decide to lock any hanging that day. Everybody gets to know he's the mayor.
Drunkard: Twice in a game, may drink someone at night. That person may not get statuette normal way or anything, also can't do night activities afterwards.
Security guard: Each night, protects different person than last night. Protected person can't be killed directly. Everybody knows who's protected in usual variant.
Investigator and Executor: This pair allows town hall to check one's identity instead of hanging him. However, killing Investigator will make town hall unable to check one's identity, and killing executor - to hang.
Hazard game addict: Once in the game, may start to point at people. If he points at citizen, he gets killed, else pointed person dies. He plays until death or getting figurine.
Taxman: Finds the location of figurine once. It can change though.
...and many more, but not this time.

Bandits
If bandits do not have figurine, they may try to steal it from one person per night. They also may share it.
Bad gunslinger: Wins duels despite the voting, unless facing good gunslinger.
Blackmailer: Blackmails one person at zero night. This person must help him in talkings and votings.
Avenger: Can kill one person once.
Boss: Bosses around.
Thief: Performs extra stealing once.
Card master: Basically fuses thief and drunkar once.
...and many more.

Indians
They kill together one person per night. If they have or got the figurine, they kill one more time. They may share figurine.
Shaman: Gets to know one person's character once.
Shawoman (?!): Poisons one person once. That person dies just before figurine check-up. If that person had figurine, citizens win.
Leader: Bosses around.
Lone Coyote: Gets extra kill per night if he is last Indian.
Binocular Eye: Finds the location of figurine once.
Quiet Foot: Once in game, puts figurine at another person. This person does not know figurine is there. It returns to Indians next night if Foot's alive.
Flaming Rage: Gets extra kill per night if Indians just got figurine.
The Man With Stagecoach: May decide after a duel both players die. Everybody gets to know he's stagecoach man.
...and many more.

Aliens
If aliens do not have figurine, they may try to steal it from one person per night. They also may share it.
Detector: Each night points at person and gets to know is the figurine at the pointed person or (IRL) on which arc with Detector and pointed person it is.
Great Alien: Bosses around. May also once make current owner of figurine temporarily unable to share it.
Mindeater: Gets to know one person's character each night.
Green Tentacle: Can kill one person once.
Purple Sucker: Performs extra stealing once.
...

OK, I want to know is that interesting to you. I may host a game and explain more characters if needed. Also, above stuff is not precise (no sequence for instance), but I hope it gives you basic idea how game works.

Great!

By the way, bandits get figurine at the beginning, judge has priority over gunslingers, and game is more fun when you play it than when you read about it.

So basically it's a multi-fraction mafia with different victory conditions? I'm not sure I understand all that happens during the day phase though... duels??

It sounds interesting, but at first glance it seems like a game that needs relatively many players to work properly. I'm definitely in, as long as we get a lot of players.

The game indeed needs people. Original author aimed for 14-18. I was player in ones with 11 characters and it was still cool though.

Regarding duels:
I challenge Mat
if sheriff was not killed he can disagree
I speak why Mat should die
reverse
voting
usually one of us dies.

Good, let's wait for others. The more the merrier.
More specific stuff:
Host always announces which fraction has the figurine.
Hazard addict can't play before some night, usually one after which bandits may win.
You are welcome to submit word replacements.

We have 5 people so far then.
Random trivia: Aliens want figurine for 3 nights because each one they emit one of XYZ coordinates of Earth so they can get a ship home.
