I wouldn't suggest throwing in a cent of unjust self-pity like that in response to someone losing someone close to them. In a different manner of phrasing, not knowing your grandfather means you just didn't know him, and you can't personally care about someone you've never met. I'd rather someone I never got to know die than have that person become my best friend and then die, for a hypothetical example.
