Depends really, you'll need to do research on your own terms.
From my personal standpoint, I'm liking the XL, the larger screen is a huge plus for me, ofc, you sacrifice portability, but it's not a major point of contention to me. Be warned though, there is no free charger with the XL, so you'll need to buy it separately if you don't have a 3DS or DSi charger spare.
All in all, I think the best thing for you to do is try them yourself and weigh up the differences, I was able to compare them at a game store that had both of 'em on display for play, see if such an opportunity is available to you.
Anyways, that's all the advice I can give, perhaps others can share their thoughts too.
