The best film I have ever seen.

Brazil is an astoundingly creative movie. I should watch it again.

The Lone Ranger
Despite being talked about very negatively, I don't think this movie was that bad. The problem is that despite not having many flaws, the ones it has are major. First off, the pace and length of the movie. Dear fucking Jesus does this movie have a lot of scenes that are unnecessarily long or have no point at all. The first half hour of this movie feels like you're watching Electroma. This does eventually go away and it gets on with the story well, but still it just doesn't quite get things right. There seems to be a good climax, which should lead to the ending, but nope, another climatic scene that drags on for about ten minutes. A shame.

Secondly, this movie doesn't know what it wants to be. Is it supposed to be a comedic adventure like Pirates, or a dramatic, serious story? One moment the movie explains the details of one character's history and creates a serious mood, and then proceeds to have this character go and do something silly.

And finally, plot holes. In the first three minutes of the movie already something happens that makes you wonder how the ending will explain that, and the ending seems to be about to do that... and then it doesn't. Bleh.

As for actors, Depp did better then I expected. Tonto isn't a Jack Sparrow clone, but I could see elements of the character in him. Helena Bonham Carter has maybe seven minutes on the movie so don't fall for the advertisements.

But still, I did think it had charm and a good plot with likable characters and a really engaging soundtrack. Some of the dragged out scenes do work and it just saves it from being a bad movie in my eyes.

I recently saw Elysium. I honestly didn't feel much coming from it. It had a good idea going, but a lot of it fell flat to me. It felt like the film makers were confused as to what they actually wanted to say with it. The only thing I got from it was, "Rich people bad!" Now that's not to say it was a bad movie. It did have a few things going for it. It was just mostly meh.

I liked District 9, the way it shows you that history repeats itself was interesting. I'll go and watch Elysium, just to be sure I don't miss something :)

Anyone saw Jobs?

It's interesting how some people around here don't seem to like live-action films.

At least the japanese ones are disliked in general.

Which reminds me that I saw a few weeks ago the live-action of Ranma 1/2 on YouTube, and I honestly expected it to be worse although it wasn't really big deal at the same time (It missed lots of characters). Japanese live-actions always were kind of odd and largely disconnected from the mangás and animés.

Last weekend I watched the Green Hornet, and I found it entertaining. At least it had some fun jokes.

Have you watched Japanese movies that have nothing to do with anime at all? I really recommend Akira Kurosawa's movies. He was like best director in Japan in my opinion. Toshiro Mifune is quite possibly my favourite actor. I recomment Seven Samurai, Miyamoto Musashi trilogy, Yojimbo, Sanjuro, and he was also in American movie Red Sun.
Japan is much more then land of Anime and Manga anyways.

In live-action film we see a real world, existing right next to us. Its author tries to arrange real things, so they could act as the creations of his imagination. In every genre consisting of impossible actions and things, the credibility of the world presented in film will never be wholly fulfilled, because the special effects propeling them will never become one with the properties of our world.
Animation creates a different realm where rules, norms and sights are entirelly different. One of its advantages is that every single thing shown in the film is consistent with film's world. Furthermore, everything we see in an animated film is a creation of its authors' imagination, crafted with their own hands and adorned with their unique style.

I wouldn't look at it so black-and-white like that. Using CGI or other methods, you can make something realistic look as abstract or stylised as you want, or you can make hand-drawn animation look as realistic as you want. Obviously, come better technology, people are able to easier make whatever strange ideas they have become a reality, but it's not like animation and film are entirely different concepts. If you've seen a lot of Kubrick films for instance, even with a very simple (yet very skilled) artistic direction, the filmed footage looks totally other-worldly and dreamlike, just as much as some of the best animated movies around.

I watch a lot of films that most people wouldn't, but I don't get the appeal of Seven Samurai at all.

I'm not sure what you mean by special effects "becoming one with the properties of out world". Nothing is perfect. I just appreciate the fact that everything in a live-action film looks like it's actually real rather than some kind of abstract representation. I like real sets and real props and real actors really emoting.

I don't agree that everything in an animation is inherently consistent or imaginative – what if they make mistakes or overlook things? What if they use unfitting designs? What if the quality of the animation itself isn't up to scratch? Animation can be botched just as easily as any other form. If you really think animation is inherently more creative or unique, you're simply not following the right directors.

Ah well, I guess tastes are different. But Seven Samurai did have really good ratings.

I watched Kill Bill: The Revenge yesterday night. Despite of its really gory scenes I liked the pack of action. There were two scenes in particular that made me laugh though.

Did they add that subtitle for the Portuguese release? Everywhere else it's just Kill Bill.

Oblivion. Second time watching it I didn't quite get the same enjoyment out of it. I think in my excitement for the movie I may have let the fact that half of what happens is never explained slide a bit too much.

Exactly my thoughts.

It looks worthless. I'm sure it's one and a half hour of Apple commercials and acting like he was some sort of extraordinary being. And reviews seem to be criticising exactly that. I guess this is their response to The Internship?
