Re: The Oddworld Topic
It really depends on what you prefer. I tend to lean the most towards gameplay myself, so all the stuff that Exoddus offered makes it my favourite in the series, and it helps a lot that it still looks and sounds amazing. What I can say is that the comparative lack of mystery is likely intentional, as Exoddus seems to be more about Oddworld as a place than Abe's personal journey.Disionity wrote:On another note, I finally acquired a copy of Abe's Exoddus, (the PS1 version), I have made it through the first disc and onto the Slig Barracks. To be honest I'm a tad disappointed considering how much Exoddus has been raved incessantly on about how much better it is than Abe's Oddysee. While in terms of gameplay, I'd definitely agree, they expanded and improved on the mechanics from the original in every possible way. I wish the emotional Mudokons would be used more frequently and thoughtfully though, other than to make some puzzles more challenging. Abe's Oddysee offered far more intrigue and atmosphere for me, personally, not to mention every part of the world in AO felt seamlessly hostile while holding a strange sense tranquility and mystery as well. Especially when comparing the intro for both games, the intro for AO offers a large amount of intrigue and sets the stage for an odd adventure of epic proportions, whereas the intro for Exodus is more humorous. Abe's Exodus is most certainly not a bad game, I really do love it so far, but it just doesn't hold the same feelings of intrigue that Oddysee did.
Also, if you were even a bit disappointed with this game, Munch's Oddysee is gonna be depressing. I played through that one once, got the good ending, and haven't touched it since. Wouldn't recommend it, sadly.
Stranger is a bit weird in its design, as it lets you think that you're playing an open world game at first, even though it's actually pretty linear. Otherwise it's a blast though, tons of fun to play, and very open towards different approaches.I also got the Vita version of Stranger's Wrath HD for free through PS Plus. I really haven't gotten around to playing it though.
Re: The Oddworld Topic
Indeed, AO was not only about saving your race, but also Abe's goals and realization change throughout, whereas Exoddus is more or less just establishing another region of Oddworld. I can't quite describe it, but Oddysee really gave you a feeling of discovery when you arrived to a new area, whereas with Exoddus everything is "just kind of there". It still looks fantastic, but it lacks the same type of dynamic aesthetic that AO had.
Also, Caddicarus is doing a retrospective of the Oddworld franchise, so far he has covered Abe's Oddysee and Exoddus, and the video about Munch's Oddysee should be uploaded around Monday.

Re: The Oddworld Topic
I agree with both Dango and Disionity. I do enjoy the Oddworld games, but Exoddus is definitely my favourite of the quadrilogy (please J.A.W., do a remake of this one too).
Other thing I enjoy in the series is how they explore the dark facts of the humanization: slavery, overexploration of resources (extinction), pollution, financial interests, discrimination, and so on.

Re: The Oddworld Topic
I would quite like an Abe's Exoddus remake as well. I much anticpate a new entry in the franchise rather than another remake, though, especially considering after the six-year hiatus of output from Oddworld Inhabitants all we have gotten are remakes via J.A.W.
Re: The Oddworld Topic
I am sure they are first doing remakes to get more people back into series before making a new game.
Aren't they gonna do Hand of Odd real time strategy after they are done with remakes?

Re: The Oddworld Topic
I think Lorne really wants to make Fangus Klot.
Re: The Oddworld Topic
Oh yeah, the first M rated Oddworld. I heared about it. Not sure which one would I rather see first.
Re: The Oddworld Topic
I personally want to see Squeek's Oddysee or "Abe HD" as the next entry in the franchise. The Brutal Ballad of Fangus Klot is welcome, as well as SligStorm would be interesting.
Also, I would like to ask everyone here, what platform do you think Abe's Oddysee and Exoddus played the best on, PlayStation or PC? As well as what is your preferred platform to play the four Oddworld games on? If you have one, that is.

Re: The Oddworld Topic
For me, PC is best for all Oddworld games except Stranger's Wrath due to some issue with game that makes it unplayable on some PC's including mine.

Re: The Oddworld Topic
I play them on PS3 these days. Not a fan of the keyboard controls for the old ones, but I think New 'n' Tasty will have controller support, which is neato.
Re: The Oddworld Topic
I think both games are perfectly playable in both PS1 and PC (although I have bigger preference on PC).

Love it!
Re: The Oddworld Topic
I wanna have it
Re: The Oddworld Topic
I didn't know it was possible to do that, but I like it!
Re: The Oddworld Topic
I remember seeing someone do a level hack where the background and platforms were all drawn on lined paper with a pencil. It was pretty cool, I'll have to find it again sometime.
Also! If anyone's interested, looks like they're having a small contest to name the trophies for NNT.

Re: The Oddworld Topic
Interesting. I don't have brilliant ideas for names but I might give a shot.

Re: The Oddworld Topic
Super neat that they are doing stuff like this, as well as the voice recording thing.
Re: The Oddworld Topic
Yeah, they have been asking the help of the fans a lot. I sent an e-mail with my suggestions for the trophies names but I really don't expect winning.
