FIFA World Cup 2014 - Brazil

Post by Rsandee »

Thought I'd make this thread a bit early, since I'm looking forward to it. My country was second last time, I hope we'll straighten that out now.
The 2014 FIFA World Cup will be the 20th FIFA World Cup, an international men's football tournament that is scheduled to take place in Brazil from 12 June to 13 July 2014. It will be the second time that Brazil has hosted the competition, the previous being in 1950. Brazil was elected unchallenged as host nation in 2007 after the international football federation, FIFA, decreed that the tournament would be staged in South America for the first time since 1978 in Argentina, and the fifth time overall.

The national teams of 31 countries advanced through qualification competitions that began in June 2011 to participate with the host nation Brazil in the final tournament. A total of 64 matches are to be played in twelve cities across Brazil in either new or redeveloped stadiums, with the tournament beginning with a group stage. For the first time at a World Cup Finals, the matches will use goal-line technology.

With the host country, all world champion teams since the first World Cup in 1930 (Uruguay, Italy, Germany, England, Argentina, France and Spain) have qualified for this competition. Spain is the defending champion, having defeated the Netherlands 1–0 in the 2010 World Cup final to win its first World title. The previous four World Cups staged in South America were all won by South American teams.
Debate this extraordinary event here.

Meh, we call it Football here in the UK.

Either ways, it's not a topic of interest to myself, but it will be no doubt, to many others here.

My English is usually American English but some words I use from British English (usually replacing "z" with "s" because when I thought about it a bit longer, it sounds better with "s" than with "z") such as saying favourite, but I will always spell color without "u". As for completely different terms, and not spelling rules, I always go with American ones.

Wasn't Tobbe the one who is interested in Soccer if I am correct?
Speaking of him, he wasn't on RPC for quite some time now.

As he stated when he stepped down, he's in the middle of uni, I'm assuming he's probably in the middle of some rigorous study.

Well, others who are in uni at least drop by sometime :P
I don't want to imagine what kind of uni is he going in if he cannot even drop once a week.

woo soccer woo

I used to play on a soccer team for two years, it was fun. I've never watched a televised soccer game in my life, I'm much more interested in Hockey.

As for the name distinction, despite football being a much more logical name, I will always stick to saying 'soccer' so as not to cause any confusion as to what I might be talking about.

I know, but I was just giving that as an example because maybe he really must study non stop and has no time for anything else.

It's not that you don't have time, no, it's simply that you don't want to give half-assed attention to such a relatively active forum. If anyone were too busy to not half a half hour of free time a week, they'd be a messed-up, reclusive genius.

I'm pretty comfortable into giving this forum my alf-assed attention myself. I'm not in uni yet but I'm following the highest level of secondary education in the Netherlands and I'm studying German and Swedish on my own. :P I'm also not a big football fan myself but I think the World Cup is an amazing event, though I only really watch my own country's matches.

I am in uni but I still can manage to pop here for few minutes each time. At least holidays are a month away but until there I have lots of deadlines to accomplish :oops2: !

I normally don't pay any attention to football but when it is European and World Cups I just watch some matches for fun. I would love to see a lusophone final.

Yeah, I heard it was an autogoal in the start! That's unusual coming from the Brazilians!

On Monday it is Portugal VS Germany, it will be a tough match but I am confident!

The Netherlands VS Spain is tonight!
I hope we will set the record straight after four years, it will also be very tough but we can't afford to lose this one.
