I'm a supporter of String Theory but these chaps do seem to churn out rather a lot of BS. I've watched other videos of theirs before.

Hmm, I've seen that physical theories that supposedly rely on this just need to be able to assign a finite value to the sum to infinity of the natural numbers, but it doesn't matter what this value actually is. So contrary to what that video might have you believe, -1/12 isn't that special. Correct me if I'm wrong.

I have no idea to be honest, I've never studied the string theory or any part of physics that uses a finite value for this sum.

It's used in certain parts of normal quantum field theory, which is experimentally testable, unlike String Theory and its ilk. It's related to integration of energy over all space/time (forget which, but probably both), which usually leads to infinities. However, since absolute energy doesn't actually mean anything, the infinities can be assigned a finite value, so the numbers stay finite, and can be dealt with in a way that gives the right values for change in energy. I think it's called renormalisation.

I don't actually know that much about the maths of QFT, so if anyone else can explain this better, please do so!

I saw a different video on the subject and they drew their conclusions all from one assumption: that if you can't know whether a number would be 0 or 1 in a series of alternating 0s and 1s, i.e., whether the infinity'th number would have the value of either 1 or 0, that it must be true that it assumes the value of 1/2, because that's the average of the two. And from a series of then logical transformations, they got -1/12. I didn't like that initial assumption because it seemed to just drop out of the sky. If you don't know the value of a number, it's not gonna be an average of the two possible values it could attain; it's gonna have either the value of 0 or that of 1, but you simply don't know which. That threw me off the theory.

It's not a theory, they are just using “alternative means of assigning a sum to an infinite series”.

Amazing how much math is involved in every day life.

Which I finished my second subwoofer enclosure last night, got two of the 18" Dayton Audio drivers installed. I couldn't test the system to the fullest since some folks were already in bed in our house. Though at low volume I did play through some music. One track in particular a friend online had me to try, You Raise Me Up by Josh Gorban has some pretty deep notes.

Powered by a Peavey IPR2 5000watt amplifier.

Hehe, well you sure can say that, but the only complaint I have is the ceiling being the way it is.

The ideal configuration I would like to have, if the room was wider, was two dual opposed subwoofer cabinets on each side. (Each subwoofer cabinet has two 18" drivers)

Size reference... that TV in my room is a 52" Samsung

Well there are a limited few dubstep tracks I like, but it'll sure play 'em well!

Well... let's see... and this will be in USD costs... give or take as I am going by memory.

$180 per subwoofer cabinet, not counting shipping costs for the material. So $360 for cabinets alone total... add about $80 in shipping costs...

Then the subwoofers themselves are $250 a piece, so that times four is $1,000.

Then the acoustic damping material... 16 sheets... $200 total there...

Bi-amp speaker terminal cups, two of them... $20...

Add about probably $20 in 10AWG wiring...

Then about $8 in t-nuts and bolts...

And probably $12 in wood glue...

So for the over-all costs of the subwoofers alone... $1,700. give or take.

Then the amp for them probably is about $600.

Rest of the system... $500 for the front Cerwin-Vega S-2s... plus $250 for the pair of D-7s... then $100 on the other pair I have... and $400 on the S-1s used for rear back... $400 on the amp for the mains... $400 on the two Behringer DCX2496 digital crossovers... then the Home Theater Receiver I think was... $2,000...

So figuring the estimates, at least $6,350. Again, give or take. Nor was it spent all at the same time.
