Sorry for the bad editing quality I was 9 years old, also, it works on all versions, but I was in a country where connection was very low, so I used GBA version lol

This is a month and a half old, but I somehow missed all responses to it:
I take back most of what I've said about the backgrounds. Some of the changes were "nonsensical", but that doesn't mean they were bad necessarily, they created a different atmosphere. Though I'd say for the most part, I preferred the originals. One thing I found very interesting was how in the Saturn version, the stormy area in Pocture City used the "stormy" background from Band Land, I thought that was also a great choice.
The sound effects still kill a lot of it for me though. The original game didn't have stupendous sound design by any means, but what were they thinking?
Where in the world did I say "avoid at all costs"? I said for the reasons above it will never be my favourite version of Rayman 1. I sort of go by "a version is only as strong as its weakest link". When the sound effects are the most butchered out of all the versions, whereas the inprovements relative to the prominence and quality of the sound effects are less significant in my own opinion, it hardly has a shot at being my favourite. There are exceptions, not even ultra-rare ones, but yeah. Given this, I'd have to say that the PS1 version is my favourite.Rayfist wrote:Oh come on, is it really not worth it? The little Windows movie maker transitions for loading screens was kind of a nice touch as well, nothing outstanding, but cool. It's not at all expensive like the Jaguar version, so avoiding it really confuses me, as the SEGA Saturn was a 2D beast. SEGA and Rayman was always proven to be an awesome combination.

I use an old CRT TV; PS1 games were meant to be played on CRT TVs, not HDTVs. Yes, kinda: playing on a good CRT TV is not that bad. The quality is still okay nowadays. I just went to YouTube to compare them for myself, and it turns out you're mistaken: the Saturn version uses the rainbows/painted mountains background for the storm level, while the PS1 version uses the Band Land storm background. The latter, which I grew up with, has the nice effect of creating an unexpected cohesion between the two worlds. The former works well too thanks to its use of the "storm filter" (for want of a better term), which creates a unique identity for the level when applied to the rainbow background. Oh wow, my memory is anything but cohesive. One thing's for sure, I need to play through the Saturn version again.
The "storm filter" always bugged me a little bit in areas where there was clearly a lot of blue sky, but it is a nice effect, and exrtra layer of clouds for them I think would've added a lot. I'm actually curious as to why they didn't make more use of filters in general, they could have done wonders for night lighting and such.

I never played the Saturn version in its totality (and it was only through emulation) but it is particularly notable for having different visual effects or backgrounds. I don't remember everything but I remember to have seen in Cairnie's walkthrough that the last phase before Space Mama's battle in Space Mama's Crater has got the same background (the sidescrolling space). It makes much more sense than in other platforms in my opinion. And there's the nice detail of the shattering vitrals of Mr. Dark's hideout after his defeat.

I'm not doubting you here but I don't know if it's exactly fair to judge, as this hasn't been to common with other members, only select few. If it seems I'm replying negatively towards Ad, in often making a silly one liner. We are in no way, arguing. Though Ad has pointed to me in the past that I need to chill with the abrasiveness. You said yourself you really haven't been following the dispute, me and Ad talked about it on SKYPE for a bit, he seems to have forgotten which is okay, I reminded. The unnecesary abrasiveness on my part has been noted though. The "intellectual" part of the argument was discussed over skype, and it's over, I was simply reminding. Sorry, I wasn't trying to criticize or shut anyone up. I might have misinterpreted your reply, so forgive me.

I think the point is rather that you brought an argument you two were having here and then shut it up immediately. If you're gonna involve us, involve us. Don't incite and immediately thereafter kill conversation and/or discussion. I assume that's what spiral meant with that comment (fighting intellectual discussion by killing it as it sprouts).

I'll try to avoid that for future reference. It's not like I don't want to have any sort of conversation i just saw not much reason to further discuss since the problem had technically been dealt with.
