Talking about Michel Ancel, I decided to make a search for Pick 'n Pile since it was mentioned in the book that he developed its graphism:



He also designed other game named "The Teller" but I can't seem able to find it.

It was created before a Rayman game, by Michel Ancel alone when he was still in high school.

Exactly. These games were mentioned in the first chapter that focuses in the pre-Rayman era, from endings of the 80s and the start of the 90s. He used to play a game a lot in his teenagehood for the Atari 2600 called Plaque Attack if I remember well. He also apparently had lots of trouble to find a trustworthy and competent programmer until he showed his little character project to Frédéric Houde, a classmate. And Rayman was rendered in 3D first apparently before the prototype was even made. Also, Rayman was about to be originally called Ray Trace Man but they found the name too big so they shortened up to Rayman.

Hmm, Motormike, would it be ok if we have a page on the History of Rayman on RayWiki? Not a copy or scans, just with general information.

Humm, I'm glad you guys wanna talk abour the book, i really am.
But neither Pix, Ubi or myself can't allow some readers to 'summarize' the book on an dedicated wikipage. I guess you can understand why.

But isn't review of product considered fair use? Or do French laws work different way? Also, pretty much every game and book ever released gets Wikipedia page with details from game and to my knowledge, nothing was ever taken down from developers. If there are some laws that do not allow wiki page of this book to exist, can't we request permission from Ubisoft and Pix?

It's 2 different things to make a review of a product (movie, book, video game...) and to have it more or less summarized on Internet. I'm not sure if you know what I mean...

But then again, is a short summary about what people can find in the book and what they can expect of it really harmful?

Oh, I do understand what you mean so even if spoiler tags are used it is still illegal? Does this make whole Naruto wikipedia illegal since it covered all chapters that exist (but it did use spoiler warnings)?

Well, yes. "X is straight out of Y" is just a figure of speech, what I meant was that the scene seemed a lot like something you'd encounter in a Rayman game. It particularly reminded me of the Musician in the Blue Mountains and the end credits of Rayman Revolution.

I don't think there are any legal issues with posting summaries or discussing the contents online, as long as people don't copy and paste large sections of the text or upload high-resolution scans of the artwork.

Assuming you are talking about the Narutopedia, I believe there's a big difference between chapter summaries and flat-out copying the text word-for-word or uploading whole mangas. Spoiler tags aren't magical law shields that make the copying of the book legal- the text is still there, just hidden behind code.

Anyway, like you guys said. No problem with summaries or readers talking about the book, of course. Just no scans, no reproduction of the entire text and images of the book. It took almost a year between the beginning of the project and the release of the book. It would be disrespectful (and illegal) to have it online at everybody's disposal. That is, if you want that kind of book to be made again in the future. Who knows? Other books might interrest you... ^^

Uploading whole mangas and copying text 1:1 is illegal and I knew that.
However I didn't understand Mike first time correct. I was thinking that he said it is forbidden to even make article about book. Sorry Mike, I didn't understantd what you tried to say regarding text on wiki first time. I guess everything is good now and we know exactly what we can and can't do regarding book

As long we do not transcribe a large (or an entire page) portion of text and/or scan parts (or the whole) of a page we should be ok.

Yeah, I mean, I think we all already knew we wouldn't be able to write on the wiki text already written in the book. Interviews seem especially critical.

Making a summary of the book, however, by writing a short resume of what is the meaning of each chapter seems okay to me. I guess we misunderstood each other on that point, Mike .

A reminder is never a bad idea, anyway.

Mister Guarné, could you warn us when the English release of the book becomes available in Pix N Love? We would appreciate it a lot.
