Several teachers at the school I attended last year had a rule that if you asked how we were ever going to use any of this in our life you'd receive detention.

There was a teacher who didn't give any fuck to rules. We had a test and some of us started copying from their neighbours. That teacher noticed it and made the announcement that we all are free to copy from our neighbours. We'd learn that way. OoohK?

They can't. The ones that do attempt to answer the question are just unbelievably silly. Hear this one:

"If you do well in algebra you won't have to use a calculator for grocery shopping."

Implying that all people who did not do well in algebra carry calculators and that algebra as a whole should require years of learning to effect your experience at a grocery store. Now that makes me wanna stop procrastinating!

Maybe their point in letting all of you copy was that copying isn't always the right thing to do. The reason behind it would be that not everyone will have a correct answer for every choice, and simply copying means that you won't actually process and know the information therefore you won't "learn".

I have lost all of my faith in humanity, just letting all of you know. For fuck's sake, they allowed individuals like that one out of college and into a classroom?

My previous school would simply put in false grades if they were low because they earn more money by sending in high ones. So last year I've had quite a few failures suddenly become passing grades.

But surely their all about the education.

This reminds me of something that happened to me. It was 2007 I believe and everyone was copying test from eachother and teacher ignored it but when time for test was over, teacher analyzed all tests and on next class he knew excatly who copied who and was laughing a lot while giving bad marks because most of answers were incorrect anyways

- Their = possessive "Their stuff".

- They're = they are "They're all about the education" (They are all about the education).

I don't think I've seen you utilise a single one of those properly in recent history.

I only partially agree. How far would you get in life if you didn't know math to at least a moderately basic degree, geometry, reading/writing skills, and some scientific principles? Unless you're extremely talented in a particular field, likely not far. Also, if no one went to school, there would be a lot more ignorance, especially of the religious variety (which I know you hate), because no one would know anything about science.

What I think they should have is a screening process of sorts: Instead of having to take school for all ~12 years, you could submit a portfolio to a career prep manager and do an interview demonstrating your proficiency in a certain field (being good enough at it to make money doing it, perhaps with some connections to potential employers as well unless you're an entrepreneur), and if it's impressive enough, you can be excused from all courses irrelevant to pursuing that career. In the case of most arts, it would likely mean being excluded from all courses and being free to follow the path you've chosen. This would count as a graduation.

Another reason why I believe erasing schooling altogether would be a bad idea is because all that would promote is people being a useless waste to society. If you don't have a particular idea of what you'd like to do in the future or your aren't willing to train your abilities in doing so, then without school, the best you'll be doing is working at McDonald's for endless hours, unhappy and barely able to sustain yourself - you won't have the knowledge given to you from an education to know how to do anything better (and if you did, that's what the portfolio/interview idea would be for). Either that or you could go live in the wild, but you can do that right now anyway. With a required education for aimless folk, at least they'll be given the knowledge they need to minimally qualify (knowledge-wise) for any decent-paying career and be satisfied with their aimlessness in the future.

If I were to take myself as an example, I'm only less than a year away from being officially considered a professional pianist (which pays extraordinarily well; I'm already getting paid as a spontaneous wedding/session performer now and then), so I feel very cheated by the current schooling system.

Well, it is a cheeky question that most students who use it throw around in a rather ignorant manner, and I'm sure the teachers don't want to have to deal with cheeky and ignorant students; why give them a hard time if they're just doing their job? It's not like they're the ones forcing you to go through these courses. The boring and seemingly uninterested teachers are usually only there for a paycheque with no particular motive to do anything than read the class the textbook, and being cheeky is going to accomplish absolutely nothing, nor will it "teach" anyone a lesson, whereas the enthusiastic teachers are at least trying to make these required classes enjoyable.

Still a very unreasonable punishment in my opinion, unless the purpose of the detention was to try and explain it to you.

I completely agree with you Ad. Wish it would be like what you just described but it probably wont ever happen.

I had a teacher for Geography and History, was the same teacher, that instead of making us learn painful shit to remember by heart like other classes and with a ton of test, he was just making us take notes the whole year. ( we just added missing words ) Do team project ( I often got used because I'm good in drawing, that was the downside. ) and watch movies about the subject, mostly documentaries, that was my favorite teacher and classes. Also to make us read the text that we were taking notes on, whoever read was given candies. Best teacher ever, everyone was getting over 80/100 on all tests in those classes, wish there was more teachers like that.

i'd have way to many detentions if my school did this.
on the topic of school, Michigan created the optional "pledge of allegiance" law for schools. i'm really interested in how this plays out

I agree, learning is quite the necessity. The way the education system is set up, however, is not quite satisfactory in most of our books. By our I mean 99.99% of the planet's student body as a whole - or so it seems regarding the widely-shown hatred towards school.

That would definitely work out, however the major flaw I detect in this idea would be the lack of years of unnecesary work and brainwashing staff who frighten innocent children into easily controllable citizens of society. That simply must be a necessity in the eye of the government's, you see!

My procrastination is bothering me today.

I would like to slam my head on the wall as well, however for different reasons.

I'm good, nothing really I can complain about at the moment, on the topic of schooling and college, Ad and I discussed the difference in schooling on the IRC yesterday, and I realise now that we actually get quite a bit more freedom in our subjects. While we do have to do the main academic subjects 'til the end of our High School (ie. Maths, Science and English). In Year 9 (Grade , we don't have to do the likes of the other subjects (like History, Geography, Design & Technology etc.), we get to pick and choose about three of those other subject to do as a GCSE. Once in college (Grade 11 and 12), you can pick what you wish, and we do have quite a few colleges here which are free as well.

Well I just got yelled at for 3 hours for being tired. Apparently I have no right to be tired when its day. My mom decided that yelling at me would be the best decision to wake me up and that I would do what I have to do but after 16 years of living with me I thought she would know that yelling at me for a ridiculous reason and saying that I'm a piece of shit that can do nothing but gives me panic attacks. She went on for 3 hours saying I'm worth nothing and that she would put me for adoption just to make me cry. It led me to get a panic attack and I couldn't breath anymore and my mom decided to think I was over reacting and left me there to myself yelling at me still. It went to the point I felt like throwing up and missed school because of this. She also brought down my self esteem thanks mom, for the first time in my life it was high and now you brought it down back into the pit of hell. I feel like I'm never going to be at peace in this fucking home. I'm feeling so bad right now.
