A tip, try holding the shift key to retain proportion when resizing, thus eliminating any stretching problems.

In what program does that work

A better tip would be to view some tutorials of how to use Paint.NET, because it's capable of far more than those images suggest. It's not hard to learn either as it's pretty straightforward to use - much easier than the likes of Photoshop, in my opinion.

The idea of the robot is good, but it should be a different pose - probably one of him attacking would be nice, and he should face to the left; for some reason I think that would look better.

Perhaps because it would then be facing towards our posts rather than looking away from it.

Yep. Also, I've noticed most avatars are orientated this way. The only one I can think of right now that doesn't is Carmen, but that suits her, as she's got her back towards the player as well.
