< is plagued by thoughts like this. < tries to find a similarly illogical adoption in current English, but mustn't be looking hard enough.
Though there is "won't" as a contraction of "will not"…

< sees your 'won't' and raises you 'shan't'

< doesn't see the problem with language evolving like that < can imagine schools explaining the 'of' in 'should of' as "indicating the participle belongs to the should" and everyone forgetting its true origin as a malapropism

But < thinks this is pretty unlikely anyway, as "shouldn't of" isn't used at all. ("shouldn't've" is awesome.)

< realises that there isn't a problem, but it still makes < feel icky inside.
< thinks that some grammar Nazis (worse than <!) would get upset about two apostrophes in one word, but maybe < is wrong. < agrees that it's awesome.
