Why do the lightsabers have lightsaber crossguards? They're supposed to protect your hand, not lop off your fingers...

< honestly thinks it's an attempt to differentiate the sequels from the Saga. Though it's not much worse than lightwhips.

< has heard a lot of people suggest that it's a homemade lightsaber so it's unstable, and the "cross-guards" are like vents to stop the thing from overloading.
This is backed up by the fact that the blade does look very unstable compared to the old movies, but again, just speculation.

< supposes that just doesn't fit with existing canon - Clone Wars canon, no less - regarding the construction of lightsabers. < agrees with you though, that is likely their intention.

Actually, no < is being silly - if it's homemade then traditional lightsaber construction is a moot point.

< saw the clone wars movie, but that's it. < didn't like it.

Screw that movie, the OG animated series was boss (not the CG stuff, <'s talking about the stylised 2D one)
