When < said "chippy tea", < meant tea as in dinner. Chippy tea is just dinner from the chippy, as in a batch of fish and chips.

Like Serza "tea" is a family thing, "dinner" for friends. "Tea" is in many ways the True Name of the evening meal. In Blighty at least, kids often have dinner early in the day (between 4.30 and 6pm), which encompasses part of the traditional period for teatime. That usage never fully goes away
