Imco, if you are intending to adopt a kitten as a companion for your tom... bear in mind that that's unlikely to play out. Much of the time cats don't take kindly to each other outside of kin groups or established colonies, which is why it is normally recommended to adopt siblings or parent/child if you want more than one cat. Your tom will still be hurting from the loss of their companion when the immigrant arrives. In the right environment tom and kitten might get on famously - but, particularly if you live in a city, the most likely outcome is that tom will at best tolerate kitten and at worst actively dislike them. < has seen this too many times.

Haha, thanks for that, although < has informed already at the animal shelter he works at. < knows there are risks, but < is fairly certain it'll work out just fine. < also knows it has to be a kitten, since it has to be the kitten that adapts to our current cat, since the other way around is not quite possible. Anyway, it'll probably be a while until we actually get one, since our local shelter currently doesn't have any kittens

<'s uncle adopted one of <'s cat's litter's kittens a good ten or so years ago and at first their first cat absolutely hated the new baby. Now, they cuddle up together and curl up into one big ball of friendly fluff. It also depends heavily on the personalities of your cats, naturally, not just the enivironment. But yes, cities tend to make all life grumpy/less tolerant (also humans). Something about being bunched up together that doesn't exactly jiggle life the right way.
