At this point, I do! Indeed, in a circuit we represent the current as a "flow of charge" in an abstract sense. But in a circuit with only metal conductors (like the one I described) the charge is carried by electrons. These are negatively charged, so they move in the opposite direction to the so-called "current", i.e. from negative to positive.
This is a somewhat unfortunate accident of history, since charge signs were arbitrarily decided by early experimenters, before the electron was discovered. If they had happened to choose the opposite designation, then the electron would have positive charge, and electrons in a circuit would flow in the same direction as the current. Its antiparticle would probably be called the "negatron", and so what we know as Antitoons/Darktoons would probably have instead been called "Negatoons". Interesting stuff.
