The reason I prefer the original is because I thought Daft Punk were geniuses for having coming up with such a cool beat (I thought the vocals were kind of okay, but it was the musicality of the instrumental I found super attractive). Cola also just has way more variety in its instrumental, since it goes through a natural song progression and doesn't loop.

Yeah it's their most tongue in cheek record yet, I've just kind of accepted that everything I'm hearing would've been some real deep shit if it came out when I first got into them. I mean it's Muse so it's not like I'm going to be expecting really interpretative lyricism or anything, but I'm really over the whole resistance thing and I hope this album is finally putting it to rest. In that aspect this record really lacks personality for me, it just kind of feels like The Resistance got recycled for another round.Adsolution wrote:It's definitely my favourite thing to come out since Black Holes & Revelations. I think Drones scores way more memorable tunes too, I've given it a ton of plays already and it's quickly incorporated itself in my playlist. Drones doesn't rank particularly high for me, but I think it's largely saved by touching upon a lot of safe, but very welcome elements that felt absent the past couple years. Reapers and The Handler were pretty much exactly what I wanted Drones to deliver on.
It's aight, impossible not to cringe (video is also kind of painful) but it's solid for the live performances and a good one for the encores. Mercy was actually one of my favourites from when I saw them live, it's like a spicy extra bump of over-the-topness before to Cydonia.Adsolution wrote:Mercy
I cringed so hard at this song when I first heard it. It, to me, seemed as if it was trying to relive Starlight, except with a completely directionless motifs, and the lyrics are just awful. The bridge vocals literally made me laugh. While I still maintain the lyrics are awful, as "unmemorable" as I found the song, it somehow became the biggest earworm of the year for me, to the point where I actually started to like it.
This is the best shit off Drones imo, I love the second half of Reapers and how long it's letting itself play out, kinda reminiscent of Rage Against The Machine.Adsolution wrote:Reapers
The verse to this song is okay, nothing special in my opinion. It's very reminiscent of some late-Absolution tracks like The Small Print (which everyone seems to love but is probably my least favourite on the album). That chorus guitar riff though, that is fucking phenomenal. If any fan of iconic 80's hair-rock has been feeling starved, look no further than this fucking riff. The solo too, AAAH THE SOLO, I've been DYING for some of this batshit crazy OoS-type stuff for so long. And it goes on for literally three minutes, I love it.
The Handler
This. Song. Fucking. Kicks. So. Much. Ass. When I heard the guitar riff in the intro I was like "no way, it just did that, that is so GOOD", and the song never stopped surprising me. The prechorus, again, is probably one of my favourite Muse moments (the bass line jesus). The bridge just goes all out, it's so epic, so full of energy and angst, I can't, it's just too good. The solo starts off cool, but I really think it should've evolved past just repeating the same four bars like ten times in a row. But yeah, arguably my favourite song on the album.
Yeah I completely agree, the delayed satisfaction is pretty fucking x-treme and I love the symphonic turn at the end in contrast to the solo. I've seen a lot of shit about it not doing enough to warrant 10 minutes, but I actually found this to be a nice change of pace of what I went into expecting another Survival.Adsolution wrote:The Globalist
Ho man, this track is fucking dank. The composition itself is so evocative I can see an extremely detailed, nonexistent music video playing out in front me whenever I hear it. I love how much it takes its time throughout its various stages, and the build up to the climax is so beyond hype. This is the third time I'm saying this now - the solo is one of my favourite Muse moments, it's literally one of the most epic things I've ever heard, it's probably my favourite part of the entire album. The last section, obviously Queen-esque, is great. It's dynamic and powerful, especially when he belts out those high notes ("The greatest hunter will survive alone"/"Lost in space and time, forever more").
I actually haven't ruled Muse out from eventually entering the experimental phase considering their age and the band's lifespan. This is one of my favourites, everything sounds all syrupy and smooth about this track, and I love the violins kicking in near the end. I really like these bedroom pop, nujazz type instrumentals.

True, it does make for a surprisingly good live piece. I actually kind of wish that the song ended after the solo - maybe with a one-minute, super metal-rock ending to top it off, and that the Queen ending was its own track entirely, with more to it. Some of their Hullabaloo-era b-sides were pretty experimental, like The Gallery.
