My internet handle used to be something along the lines of "Ambidextrous Moose" or some other animal like that.
The problem was it wasn't very unique and was too long, and I thought one made up word would be better than the classic adjective-noun system. People tend to call me Ambi now anyway...


- I've literally developed a nocturnal sleeping pattern through the holidays and it's not changed: I stay awake all night, go to school and when I get home I sleep from 4 pm to around 11 pm, cycle repeats. Today I've managed to stay awake, but I'm slipping, even now. I'm hoping if I can last to stay awake all day for at least one day and go to sleep at the proper time, I can punch my sleeping pattern back to normal, and today I've gotten further than usual (though I did take a short kip).
I've just got to hope for the best...

I've had sleeping problems every day of my life from the age of about 7 onwards... I used to hardly sleep, but now that I sleep more, it's at completely the wrong time...

- I have the same problems as Ambi, I sleep at 3 am because of summer, and then I'm awake at 11 am, or maybe 12 am, lunch hour, which is awful.
Also, Ambi, you should be in the TTQ now, plz : BTW it's gonna be hard to accostumbrate to "ambles", but that's a good one.

I wonder if language will continue to evolve to turn phrases like 'a picture of myself' or 'my photograph' into simple, one-worded things like 'selfie' and we all end up talking like "ham sandwich shrekt totes selfie be cray cray lolz. wat u?"

It's worth bearing in mind that 'selfie' doesn't just refer to 'a picture of myself', it has an entire map of connotations that make it a separate though related concept. Also that slang, contractions and other means of keepin' it brief have existed in all the languages (well, except prestige or sacred forms I guess) in all the time periods. And since a lot o' peeps already talk like that that online, it's already begun Selfies are great btw.

Molly's been throwing up and leaking puddles of shit all over the damn house, in particular my sister's room which will probably be unfit for human habitation for the next week or so. Suffice to say she is not well she's trying to cough something up but can't quite manage. I worry that she's swallowed a stray Christmas decoration. Eddie, her son, is also a shaman (ie. he sometimes has fits) and had a brief, violent spell while we were trying to clean up, the poor baby - I think he's just super worried for his mama. We're gonna take her to the vet soon, I'll be staying behind to keep Eddie company...

Meh. I think, in a world where your beauty is almost always being evaluated, it's better for people to find themselves beautiful than to constantly depend on scraps from other people. It's also useful to immortalise a particularly good look, or good day. They're autobiographical. It's sad when people post them exclusively for validation, but that's symptomatic of a wider problem surely.

That whole "beauty evaluation" is meaningless. I find that social pressure on looks perfectly disgusting, and I see selfies as another symptom of that appearance diktat.

Aye, but even outside society's obsession with a certain form of beauty (hence the duckface), people should still be able to appreciate things about their own appearance that they like. Selfies can be as much an act of rebellion for those who don't fit society's ideal du jour - ie, most people - as they may be an act of submission. If I'm honest, I see selfies as part of the solution. It's a means for the self to define what it's own beauty is.

Besides, their use as an 'I woz here" or "here's proof that I went to Disneyworld" is pretty grand.
