What you said about gezellig reminds me of PowerPatrick explaining the concept of hygge to me years ago. I suppose it's a pretty Germanic concept, quite a shame the tribes didn't take it with them to Britain/lost it while cavorting in Britain.

One of the things I love about linguistics is that, although everything can be expressed with every language (whether with one word or many)*, different languages hold different concepts dearer and express them more or less succinctly than others. All the different connotations of words across cultures and time periods, even within the same 'language' (they're all scatter graphs really)... I could lose myself in that. And something even closer to my heart is trying to chart their histories, looking at how meanings (and sounds!) change over time - like the sisterhood of Dutch and English, the continuing influence of classical languages on them both, and so so so much more. I hope one day to really sink my teeth into IE and NC historical linguistics. I'm not good at speaking languages, but I absolutely love learning about them.

*Of course ceremonial and similar languages are exempt here...

You should look at Circassian. It's fucking insane (ie. no more than two phonemic vowels, single consonants acting as verbs, not to mention ALL the consonants), but oddly beautiful too.

The song's name is Lament (in plain English!).

The lyrics are chock full of emotional subtext. Since you flew away was translated from something that both means 'retreating hastily' or even 'cowardly' - 'retreat in flight' quick and/or while running away. Hirlwm. The worst of Winter. That time of the year where Winter is ending, but the food supplies have run out. All my life is the worst of Winter, I have no Summer, since you left.
