It's definitely not as appaling as, let's say, reporters or journalists being arrested or executed. Though I suppose, if you enter another country and break its laws, then that's the risk you take.
Overall, it's a shame, but he bought it by deciding to enter the world of drug smuggling. Sure, he's mentally ill and all, but if it's so crippling that he can't make sound decisions, then maybe he should have been forced into staying home.
