Trust me Spiral, no other drug smugglers will ever be put off because of that. They don't care about anything, end of.

You speak for all of them?

Statistics say that death penalty has no preventive effect whatsoever, so you're most likely wrong about that, spiral.

As much as I'd like illegal drugs to just disappear from the face of the earth, it's just not going to happen I'm afraid because it makes only so much money.

Perhaps it would be more effective if it was used more often.

No, it wouldn't. There are far better ways to prevent crime than to increase punishment.

How do you know? Are there scientific projections which predict that capital punishment would not reduce crime, no matter how frequently it was used and how harsh it was?

Better. There's historical and statistical evidence. After all, in the middle ages, criminals were often publicly executed for all kinds of crimes, and that didn't effect the crime rates much.

I still believe that punishment is the only thing some people understand, but in no case does it justify a society which murders its people. Not to mention that I would rather die from a lethal injection than get assraped for the rest of my life in jail.

Of course you need punishment for crime, but if you have a society with a crime problem your first option shouldn't be to enforce stricter punsihment.

The middle ages and the modern day are rather different with regards to crime. We now have technologically-advanced methods for catching criminals – CCTV, DNA testing, fingerprinting. I would think that it is now possible to track down criminals with far greater efficiency, and with far greater certainty of their guilt. I also think our enormously-improved communication, information and media systems would ensure a high level of awareness among the populace of the punishments to be expected for unlawful deeds.

The modern day is sufficiently different from the middle ages that such statistics may be considered irrelevant.

I hope the next poll is more lighthearted than the last two.

I don't understand why normal people would go to the trouble of memorising different species of fish. Really. They all look the same to me.

I'm just guessing based on the fact it's red, and that a red herring would be making a point, rather than just posting a picture of a fish.

They don't taste the same though, which is much more important.

I guessed it too.
