Yeah, I'm pretty sure that's true. I think AMD gave up on their proprietary ones. The firmware's still proprietary though. :mefiant:

In some cases they even work better. I remember using cemu, and it ended up working better on Linux than Windows due to the driver.

Still, I remember how long it took AMD to get their "abstraction layer" code into the mainline kernel. Basically it was a huge block of code from their proprietary driver that they needed to put in the kernel to have a proper open-source driver. They were sent back to slim it down at least three times. Still, now it's there and it works!

That explains why the kernel updates the driver then if it's built in. < wasn't sure if it was built into the Debian kernel or not, but enabling non-free just made everything work.

Yeah, the driver code is part of the kernel, but the code has to load firmware onto the GPU, which is non-free and needs to be obtained separately. nouveau is exactly the same now, except that Nvidia only released enough firmware to get the thing out of bed, not run it at its full potential.

< doesn't know why they'd do that, there's much more potential if the driver is open-source, compared to their proprietary driver.

I forgot it's not the you game. :P

I think it's ultimately down to their automotive customers, who require a guarantee that all the code they run originates from Nvidia themselves.
Because, you know, secret code works so well in automotive. *couVolkswagencoughemissionscough*

Seems more complicated than it should be, especially since AMD can do it.

RaymanPC seems very slow with Firefox compared to Chrome, and I don't know why, so I'll be using Chrome for a bit there.

Oh so that's what you meant when you said it was a bit slow earlier, I thought you meant in terms of posting. Only with Firefox though?

Yes I meant that!
Yes, it's good on Chrome, and I haven't other browsers. The weird thing is that my Firefox is new since I just installed it, and only added an adblocker (same one as with Chrome, uBlock origin).

Mine is slow at loading certain pages too but I thought that was just the server itself taking its time.

That seems strange. It's not like there's a shedload of JS needed to make the site work, or anything like that. :?

Well some pages take time with Chrome too actually, so it's probably the server that is indeed slowing things down?

It's lightening fast for me, but then certain things at times like loading a page or posting will stall for a few seconds. I think that's been happening all along though for me.

I have some stalls, but I'm pretty sure they're all coming from my internal network here, which is a mess.

I wonder what would be the best browser in terms of security and performance.
