He had a big, cheerful smile on his face at most times! It's like he didn't even give a fuck, despite being in such a hard game.
RayFan9876 wrote:I guess it also depends how you've grown up with the games. For me, RRR1 even held an atmosphere that Origins didn't have, but then RRR2 completely lost that because it landed on Earth. RRR1 even still had some serious elements to it, such as the dark graphical style of Rayman 2 and 3 and the mood of the prison/arena. But Origins just took a completely new style. I'm not saying that's a bad thing, it's just not so much one I like.
It isn't completely new, it's just a bit sillier in many areas. It still maintains a lot of the different types of environment that have always been a part of the series, and the backgrounds look like they could have been concept art from any other Rayman game. R2 and 3 weren't that dark either, especially not 3.
I honestly think a lot of people have been overreacting about the shift in tone. It's not a big deal.

To be honest, I think Rayman 3 was slightly 'darker' than the other games, but it's something I cannot put my finger on. Most of the levels seemed to emit a mysteriously 'unsafe' atmosphere. There are rivers and countryside in Clearleaf Forest, just as there are in the Fairy Glade, but there's something more welcoming about the latter.

I don't really see this as a "big cheerful smile:"
To me it looks more like a positively determined, yet calm face.

Really? I think switching to a totally outrageous (in a neutral sense) cartoon animated style for the foreground is quite a new take on Rayman. The backdrops though are quite the opposite, and are rather nicely shaded and detailed, which does resemble the past games. While it is nice to see both, I think the combination rather looks a bit odd. All the other Rayman games had a very distinct style, Origins sort of jumps all over the place.

I can assure you, if there is one thing I'm not doing, it's overreacting, because I'm just stating my honest opinion/perception of Origins, which many people do share, which says at least that we're both right in a way. I do agree though that many people are overreacting too much.
Like I said, I find Origins to be fun as hell.

But right here is where I agree with Xenon.

I can't agree with Xe, because a full circle would indicate that Rayman in Origins would behave just like Rayman in Rayman [1]. The one thing that both Raymen have is that they're happy-go-lucky instead of more serious like Rayman 2 and Rayman 3. However they're happy-go-lucky in different ways. Rayman 1 is the calm but happy, optimistic Rulez while Rayman Origins is the happy, humorous yet fucked-up Fat_Mario.

It's still silly as fuck though, and has them weird potato sack Hoodlums, rather than menacing mechanical pirates who enslave people.

To me it looks like a cheerful smile. I don't really see the determination anywhere, with those big puppy eyes and the mouth that clearly goes upwards.

Rayman 1 was going for a cartoon style as well. I think the idea behind Origins was to go for a cartoon style like the first one, but one resembling more modern cartoons, in order to keep up with the times. But at the same time, the game keeps the atmosphere of the sequels, which is created by the backgrounds and some of the music (such as the underwater levels). It's more of a mix of different styles than a completely new one.

The problem with this is that the modern cartoons they chose to emulate have a pretty terrible art style based on flat colours with no texture. R1 was far more naturalistic. Imagine how much better Origins would have been if the characters had been drawn in the same style as the backgrounds, which was the case in R1.

Origins rarely approaches the atmospheric quality of the earlier games. R1 is evoked excellently in the Electoon bridge levels, which strongly recall Allegro Presto, and some of the Desert of Dijiridoos levels – the ones with the golden sky, disintegrating cloud platforms and dual suns bring Gong Heights to mind. The only part of the game that really evokes R2 effectively is a certain stage in Angsty Abyss. You must know the one I’m talking about; it captures the feel of the Whale Bay and the Sanctuary of Water and Ice perfectly, largely thanks to its use of music.

Probably. The only issue I see is that it would be harder to animate.

If you ask me, the levels don't have to resemble levels from earlier games in order to capture the atmosphere. The forest themed levels would be a good example of this.

Look at atmosphere as a product of visuals, audio and gameplay. These are the tools the developers must use to convey a mood or a feeling. Make a new level resemble an old one visually, and you’ve already gone a long way towards recreating its atmosphere, but it’s just one piece of the puzzle. The levels I mentioned above were successful in all three areas.
El Dango wrote:The forest themed levels would be a good example of this.
The developers of Origins nailed the forest visuals. The music and gameplay, not so much. The forest in R1 had a stronger aura of mystery, thanks mainly to the music, and the slower pace of the gameplay allowed us to dwell on it. Origins is too manic and whimsical.

I don't entirely agree with the last part, since some forest areas in Origins are completely silent and let you enjoy the visuals alone, along with some naturalistic sounds. Sure, these moments don't take up much of the game, but they're there.
This is pretty much what the series does anyway, it has never been entirely about atmosphere, the constrast has always been there, which has pretty much been my main point from the beginning of the discussion. Origins does a lot of things differently when it comes to both style and gameplay, but it's still the same basic things that franchise has always done, only in a new and fresh way.
Each game has always been somewhat different from the previous as well, it's just how the series evolves. One large step at a time, and none of this samey, nostalgia-rooted stuff that so many other series tend to do.
This discussion has gone on for a long time, so this is my final statement on the subject (for now). Feel free to agree or disagree.

Hey, one of my friends' dad has one eye with -14 and another with -20. Yours are not all that bad.

Speaking of eyes, my left eye is colourblind and slightly deformed. It isn't really too much of a problem though, in fact, I think it's kind of neat.. aside from people's "hello" instead being "what's with your eye?" My eyesight is really, really terrible at long range (sorry, I don't have any statistics), but I don't do much that requires long-range visuals, so again, that isn't much of a problem. Glasses help, but I don't like to wear them.
Maybe laser surgery could prove useful here, but that will require a looooot of money, and a lot of money is what I don't have. Plus, I prioritize purchasing audio/graphical equipment and such.

That's perculiar. How did only one eye end up being colourblind? Good that that happened though, 'cause then you can still experience the world with all its beautiful colours!
I do wonder, if you close your right eye, do you see slightly deformed colours, or do you see a memory of what you would have seen if your right eye were open; i.e., does your brain colour in the things of which it knows the true colour?

Well it's not a hundred percent colourblind, but it's just very, very, very desaturated. I made a quick comparison from my left eye to my right eye:
As you can see, the right eye is blurry but the left eye is desaturated. It's a hereditary disease of some sort. But what you said about my mind filling in the indistinguishable colours actually is partially true.

Sorry to interrupt anything but I need some help. Does anyone has got any idea which model of the screwdriver is compactible with the removal of a nail of the Game Boy/Color cartridges?
My Pokémon Silver battery died many long time ago and I am still wondering where I can get the damn screwdriver to substitute the battery for I can play it again. Because of that issue I've lost my save file, aaargh...
