Exactly. She's also one of the many examples of the use of animals for research, which is a hot topic in ethics too. United States, France, Argentina and China also used animals for their space trips.

That's because it's a transcription based on French orthography, which was the standard for Russian names from the 18th century (Catherine the Great made it the language of the court) until the fall of the Soviet Union, which used it on all its passports. Following the emergence of the USA as a global power in the 20th century, English replaced French as the language of diplomacy in the first half and went on to become a global language in the second half. I have read some Russian literature in the past, and it did indeed seem that France had a lot of influence over Russia overall, lotta characters loved to slip through a French sentence or two, so i do understand that, i’m just not used to it being written out like that
