She's the first dog sent to space by the Russians in the 50s. Her survival was the intel everyone needed to ensure space travel was survivable, leading to later flights of Youri Gagarine, which then accelerated the space war, leading to a man walking on the moon.

Exactly. She's also one of the many examples of the use of animals for research, which is a hot topic in ethics too. United States, France, Argentina and China also used animals for their space trips.

That's because it's a transcription based on French orthography, which was the standard for Russian names from the 18th century (Catherine the Great made it the language of the court) until the fall of the Soviet Union, which used it on all its passports. Following the emergence of the USA as a global power in the 20th century, English replaced French as the language of diplomacy in the first half and went on to become a global language in the second half. Unsurprisingly, in the late 90s the new Russian Federation chose to adopt a different transcription, based this time on English pronunciation, and that's the one you've probably seen all your life.

More broadly, it's important to keep in mind that transcriptions vary widely across languages, owing mostly to their respective pronunciations. A name you might be used to reading as Khrushchev in English (Хрущёв) is written Khrouchtchev in French, Chruschtschow in German and Chruszczow in Polish. The only "true" spelling is the original Russian one: anything else is just an attempt to reproduce it in a different alphabet, while trying to respect the pronunciation of a different language.

I have read some Russian literature in the past, and it did indeed seem that France had a lot of influence over Russia overall, lotta characters loved to slip through a French sentence or two, so i do understand that, i’m just not used to it being written out like that :fou2: But i did learn some new facts from this, so thank you.

If we need to think about Pangea then that means it must have been created by Cornelius Edward Pangeus.

(Yes, this is my actual contribution to this question)
