It's often seen as a "viral challenge" to beat up or drug other people. You'd have to be an asshole to do that

No. It cannot. It is objective.

It's not objective, it's subjective.

Re: The Awesome and Cool Poll Thread - Poll #128: Would you provide your real ID to use social media without restriction
I've decided to ignore you this time and propose a somewhat more... Hot topic
There has recently been discussion in the European Union about online identification for using social media. It has been argued that this is to prevent minors from accessing certain content, but many argue that this is simply an excuse to control access to content on the Internet (and, therefore, a form of censorship).
What are your thoughts on this? Do you agree with this? Would you give your real ID to be able to use social media freely, or would you be willing to give up social media if it became mandatory?

My next thought was for which decade has the best music…
Tbh I’d give it if I must, but I don’t see any good reason too.

Re: The Awesome and Cool Poll Thread - Poll #128: Would you provide your real ID to use social media without restriction
I'm going with no here. It's understandable when it comes to a bank app or something, but social media? This is absurd. It's up to parents to keep their kids off those sites if they're underage, just like it's up to parents whether they allow their child to play an 18+ video game.
Giving your ID to be stored in these databases just to be on a social media platform is ridiculous. Suppose they get breached at some point, and great! People now have a copy of your ID or your driver's licence. Who thought of this bright idea.

Nah. Fuck that shit, let me read my weird fanfics in peace without the higher powers wanting to limit my ability to read said fanfics!

Social media now comes with fucking algorithms that always want to show you divisive shit and unfettered ads.
At this point I'd provide ID to a rehab so that they force me on a detox for that shit.

I think Social Media is a cesspit and its design to bait user engagement by algorithm, usually by promoting negative content that is at best going to cause mental strain, only makes us collectively suffer for it. On that basis, I can understand why there are attempts to restrict its use, but I would say that the ends don't necessarily justify the means.
It's barely been a month or two, and we've got Discord showing us the pitfalls...what was it, 70,000 users having their IDs leaked?

I feel like the id system might be discontinued because some person in power gets exposed for being on gay dating apps or something because of the worries of data leaks

If past legislation is anything to go by, there'll be some caveats or exemptions to prevent such occurrences.
Re: The Awesome and Cool Poll Thread - Poll #128: Would you provide your real ID to use social media without restriction
This is exactly why it's a stupid idea. People should have the common sense by now to understand how common database breaches are, instead of trying to even pretend it's safe to store IDs on their servers. Like, I get it with banks, at that point they have all your personal information already and it's almost impossible to prevent that if someone does do something this serious, but giving your ID to social media platforms where it's just completely easily preventable, it's about as dumb as it gets.Master wrote: Sun Oct 12, 2025 1:16 am It's barely been a month or two, and we've got Discord showing us the pitfalls...what was it, 70,000 users having their IDs leaked?
Re: The Awesome and Cool Poll Thread - Poll #128: Would you provide your real ID to use social media without restriction
Absolutely not. I believe internet should be all about securing your privacy and anonymity, and the things going on right now are, well, not about securing privacy and anonymity at all… Also, i dislike the fact that some sites need your phone number; it’s fine in some cases, but i don’t want Youtube to know my phone number, for example. Emails are enough.

Re: The Awesome and Cool Poll Thread - Poll #128: Would you provide your real ID to use social media without restriction
We give our personal information to the Internet provider, which makes sense at all since we have to pay them for the service, but why should we identify ourselves on the Internet? It's not about doing illegal/weird things, it's just about protection. I remember that we were told not to say anything about us on the Internet 20 years ago because we never knew who could have that information, then why should we give ours now with no hesitation? Is it because governments don't wanna have any kind of criticism on social media so they can consider any kind of criticism as hate speech? I'm very sorry, but this law is simply stupid. If we achieve a point where it is mandatory to introduce our personal information to even search something on Google, I'll find any way to skip it, just like you can skip Twitter and YouTube restrictions.

Like, I don't give a monkey's about social media, but I imagine that any law of this nature could also be used against sites like this one, or Wikipedia, or OpenStreetMap, or anything else. Which is terrifying. So yeah, definitely going with the first option...
