He got the green light from Ubisoft shortly after his announcement regarding the separate indie group's fundation (July or June 2014, if I'm not mistaken).
Ubi got a little terrified that they might lose the guy, because at this point he might slightly be annoyed that he's not allowed to realize his own stuff.

So what if it's exclusive? That's suck for us but what can we do. Jeez.
