Re: Rayman Origins
I just wanted to show a mod that so much effort put into it, made a sarcastic comment, and then everyone here doesn't get.
I'm done. If you need me, I'll be in Sweater Town.

Re: Rayman Origins
Hmm, I do think Picture City could be remade in RO, but using R1's assets isn't going to do the trick. Like I said earlier, Picture City is not an organic looking area, it's angular and man-made. The issue with it in regards to Origins is that in Origins, most environments have sleek curves and have a natural feel to them for the most part.
I think the mod might have looked better in areas like the Infernal Kitchen, or Moody Clouds, which don't look quite as sleek due to their constructed nature.

Re: Rayman Origins
I guess the big problem for me with that mod was that the tiling of the many, many erasers and strangely coloured backgrounds clashed too much. I'd look at it again to confirm, but I don't want to make myself sick. xD
Re: Rayman Origins
I actually downloaded it and played through the entirety of Jibberish Jungle. It's not bad! It was really interesting, bad thing is, it turns the water pitch black. That's a major set back.
Re: Rayman Origins
More issues in phrasical construction?
Re: Rayman Origins
Like always said, old doesn't fit with new. Okay, maybe not.
Maybe it's just because Origins feels like a rushing run and Rayman 1 feels like a little bit more slow?

Re: Rayman Origins
Well I got a huge kick in non-physical locations out of that mod video. I guess I'm a huge Rayman 1 dork.
But I didn't need anyone or anything to tell me that, it's obvious enough already.
Edit: But to add to what people have been saying, yeah, I don't really see Picture City as an organic environment (Although it seems it would've been depicted that way to some extent in the cancelled R4), but as an actual city, albeit a small one. If Picture City ever does make a return I'd love to see it depicted more city-like, with pencil skyscrapers, eraser buildings, and at least two theatres.
Edit 2: Look what I found.

Re: Rayman Origins
I just noticed something: at the end of the intro for this game, the silhouette showing the heroes becoming imprisoned seems to show two Grand Minimi instead of a Minimus and a goth teensie. Anyone else notice this? It's probably just an error of course.

I will speak French for you, but it is the English forum, BestXIII!
Salut!

Re: Rayman Origins
As pretty as Rayman 1 is, it's age is showing. Something I don't think will happen with Origins due to it's more 'organic' style.

Re: Rayman Origins
I'm pretty sure in twenty years time Origins will have aged as well. Who knows what games will look and feel like then? I bet you people in the nineties used to say "you know what, Rayman [1] is so cool, it'll never age!"

Re: Rayman Origins
Origins is literally a living cartoon though. No pre-rendered graphics, no limitations, just high definition animation at 60fps.
Rayman 1 used an art style that was possible for that time, which made it look really 'plastic', probably due to the layering and resolution limits of 1995.

This combined with the above leads me to believe that you don't actually know how animation works, or what it even is.darkhairwarrior wrote:just high definition animation at 60fps.

Re: Rayman Origins
Animation at 60fps is a lot better than 30fps animation? Thought that was obvious.
Rayman 1 in 1995 was not able to render High Definition art, so to compensate, they used a more bold art style. That art style is beginning to look like plastic.
Rayman Origins doesn't have limitations outside of the 1080p limit, which is hardly a limit since the picture in Origins is still really clear.
Pre rendered graphics wasn't the right word, my mistake. More like fused layers. Rayman only has 3 background layers, whereas Origins has as many as it needs, making the depth more effective.

Re: Rayman Origins
Hmm, it's been a while since I've played Rayman 1, so correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure that it ran at 60FPS.
As for the art-style...well, I'm not seeing it to be honest. I can understand your gripes animation-wise, but the art-style doesn't really come across as obscenely synthetic to me, I think the issue stems from it being unable to effectively convey the smaller details, due to the lower resolution it's been worked with, and the other limitations you've stated.
I think a better comparison could be made if we had the original artworks to compare, Origins and Legends have the advantage of running in the especially made UbiArt, in that it allowed artists to effectively and quickly bring their drawn art in. Rayman 1 probably required a little more work in order to realise things, and I think it'd be a fair estimate to state that things probably got lost when being downscaled to fit.

Re: Rayman Origins
I never said Rayman 1 didn't run at 60fps. I just said Rayman Origins has clear, 60fps animations (Which could have been worded better). Rayman 1 also has it but I wouldn't call Rayman 1's animation the same as Origins', since Origins uses hand drawn animation, like from a cartoon, while Rayman was more of a 'stale body parts floating around' deal.
Rayman 1 had animation, not saying it didn't, just not as crisp as Origins.
I know that Origins and Legends were probably miles easier to develop with a much better outcome, but that doesn't really kill my point that Rayman 1's started to age.
As for the 'plastic' portion of my statement, things like grass drops looking drippy and shiny.
