Chris McEntee has updated his website (probably ages ago but I only noticed now).

There's an article about Rayman Origins from Game Developer Magazine written by him which I think is worth having a look:

Maybe my memory was tainted by Legends's and the mobile games' more childish direction, but Origins does have some semblance of tonal awareness at times. I can't get past the whole storyline issue, but I definitely appreciate Origins for actually making me feel like I'm in Rayman's world again.
This!

Kinda miss these scrapped guys...

They're spiky all around, it would have been interesting to fight them.

Man, everything scrapped from Origins was so cool.

I still wanna know why they scrapped Tarayzan.

What bothers me in the final version is the amount of Teensies compared to the Raymen and Globoxes (if I could say it that way).

I mean, even if the scrapped characters hadn't been scrapped, there would've still been too many playable Teensies (and there would've been even more). Did Ubisoft have a preference for them? Or perhaps they found it easier to make them?

I'm happy with the characters in Legends though. The numbers of each character type are more balanced and, thankfully, they got rid of the useless Green Teensy.

They maybe thought people want more silly stuff?

It was likely a decision made by the team or the execs, considering how much of the story is already in.

Gameplay > Story

The Devs wanted to focus more on the gameplay than the story.

The lack of story makes it feel like a really good Mario knockoff. I never wanted Rayman to become just another "just have fun, there's no story lol, it's for kids!" kind of series, but alas, here we are.

What I really want to do is ask the developers (preferably Ancel, of course) if RO's Magician is the same character as R1's. I need to know, as there's been no conclusive evidence. All we have is assumptions based on his title and hat.

I don't mind so much since Rayman was being completely revamped and it certainly tickled everyone's nostalgia. Though I would love a new story... :(

lol, that's how it began. And just having fun and no story doesn't sound bad to me. And what's wrong with making kids for games? Countless of games are "made for kids" yet a lot of them are played by adults.

Hmm...

I think ultimately, one of the biggest strengths of the series is how its able to retain a core set of ideas, and yet refresh and create new interpretations of said ideas. I think to some, that's also a weakness. The formula for each game tends to have differences, minor or major, which causes preference to come in, and is probably why we tend to have this kind of divide between different eras.

At the very least, I think we should be thankful that each title within the series has retained a good quality, which has given the franchise much credibility. Other series who've tried to refresh or drastically change their formulae haven't been so lucky.

There's a difference between making games for kids and making games for everyone. The new games veer more on the "for kids" side, though I might just be jaded by the profound lack of self-awareness that is the Incrediballs.

And yeah, I know the series started out with an excuse plot, but I kind of liked the progression it was making in that department. Rayman 3, imo, had the best story; very simple, but not merely "beat the bad guy" either.

Yeah, Legends is a pretty fucking awesome game, for all the grievances I have with it. I still play it every so often because the controls and graphics are so, so, so top quality. Rayman always wins.

Ikr? I'm noticing this weird tendency at a number of places that if it's for kids it:

1. Mustn't be serious or mustn't have even a vaguely ambitious setting.
2. Has to be made of da lolz.
3. Kidz r stoopid, so they won't care.

Conclusion: If I'd be a kid nowadays, I'd be extremely unsatisfied and would ask my parents to buy me a retro gaming console. :D

Treating the kids like this also has some severe side effects on it's own imo, because if you're not giving them anything to think about or look after if you're already having their attention in the form of making them video games then basically you're the one making them dumb in the first place.

Well, at least Mario RPG games still to this day have good story (Paper Jam for example). Rayman has no RPG games and you are sadly right. His newer games fall on same level like Mario when it comes to story.

On Ancel's stream (the 2014 one), many asked the question regarding Magician but it was ignored and we never received answer. On 2015 stream, nobody asked that question. Lets see if someone does ask in 2016 stream when it happens.

Ergh, even the Mario RPGs are quickly losing their charm. Dream Team is a tutorial-ridden fetch quest, and Sticker Star is...ugh, Sticker Star. I haven't played Paper Jam yet because it releases tomorrow in my region, but I have high hopes because I heard it makes all of the tutorials optional, which would have been great in its predecessor. I just want another Thousand-Year Door, and I'm not alone.

Damn, wish I'd known about that 2015 stream. Here's hoping he does another, if he's not too busy with his new game.

I always liked Mario & Luigi Partners in time.
I never made it past Bowser & Bowser Jr. though :C

Have you seen the "Kids react to" videos? They would get confused as to why there's a "box" on the back of an old tv and laugh at why they invented it without realising we needed to invent that to get where we are today. I doubt you would care for retro gaming as much.

Well, in Paper Jam you can double the speed of cutscenes
