Very good ^! Yes, any little changes count. < has been eating in a lot like crazy lately, as well as cutting down on fatty versions of foods. < has felt pretty nice lately as a result. Definitely worth the effort.

< has a couple hours to chill at home before < goes back to school
<'s cracked open the corn flakes, and reading the box (as you do when you're bored eating cereal) inspired < to look up what corn/maize actually is, which sent < on a Wikipedia adventure. < shall report <'s findings:
The kernels, the bit you actually eat, are a kind of fusion of a seed and a fruit, where the yellow bit is the fruit and the skin is the "seed skin" but they are technically referred to as fruits, not seeds. The rest of the plant, including the cob, is all vegetable.
Peas are even more mental. The little round pea itself is the seed, and not a fruit nor vegetable, while the pea pod is the fruit. The pea pod and pea itself is collectively a legume, which is a group including beans (and, oddly enough, peanuts. Which are not actually nuts but seeds within a fruit pod, in the same way as peas).
So pretty much the fruit is the bit that covers the seed(s) which develops from a flower, and nuts are just hard fruits. So walnuts, Brazil nuts, almonds, cashews and peanuts are among many fake imposter nuts. While vegetable is the rest of the plant including the roots, leaves, stalk and bud.
The more you know

< completed the reading sessions of the District finals with ease. Now the real challenge is the Geometry sessions, tomorrow and on Thursday.

< will be visiting a friend this weekend, how exciting. < will also be able to be rid of some unused audio gear as well. :)

< remembers being fascinated by what things are and are not fruits according to their strict definitions back in Biology class. < has since heard the conspiracy theories that biologists are so pedantic because otherwise their science would be too easy to learn. :fou:
< wishes ^ luck with the Geometry!

Thank goodness for the Wayback Archive.

< wonders what happened to the Origins scores topic.

Wow, the place did look beautiful back then… < finds the modern style easier on the eyes though, which is why < uses it.
As for the topic, seems no-one's posted in it since 2013. < guesses the interest just faded.

<'s brother just told < about an experiment he's doing in Manchester for uni, where microscopic transparent balls can be moved with a laser like a tractor beam.
The way it works is if the laser is just about touching the right side of the ball, for example, then the photon will touch the curved surface of the ball and refract through the centre, passing out the left side. The momentum of the photon leaving from the left causes an opposite reaction on the ball, pushing it right. So when the laser comes into contact with the ball, it gets sucked into the centre of the laser beam until it reaches an equilibrium of photons shooting out from all sides.
Apparently it could be used to move microbes. <'s brother proposed the idea of using it for holding two bacteria next to each other and making them fight

Photokinesis! < wonders why the force caused by the initial photon ingress wouldn't cancel it though.

< suspects it's because the initial photon enters from the top, hits the curved side and refracts leaving at about 90° from the angle it entered at, so any force from the photon entering the ball would be directed downwards

< got through the first Geometry session. < is concerned about what <'s final grade will be. The only thing < can bank on is that when < did the Algebra I final, < was sure < would get a 2 out of 5, but < ended up scoring a high 3.

< needs to get a power inverter wired into a vehicle.
