Ah, that clears things up...

< was the same when < first played (and now in fact), but in <'s experience you get familiar with the rules pretty much as soon as you start playing. Granted < played it way too safe last time and did nothing particularly eventful before < was killed off, but < remembers understanding the rules pretty quickly.

Thanks, that's helpful to <. Something for < to keep in mind when < is making the decision to participate or not. :)

< now feels stuffed from a good lunch.

< has no experience, but < has been somewhat fascinated by them lately, since < gets free Lynda from <'s uni, < might as well make use of it.

< does remember <’s dad playing with AutoCAD 2008/Pro Engineer Wildfire 9.0

But < doesn’t have a computer for that anymore :(

< says it's nothing useful per se, as < is just trying to get a population of bit arrays to converge towards a reference array. But < wants to start with simple stuff before using the same methods on more complex subjects such as combinatorial optimization.

Don't you get free software for 3D modelling? < hears a lot about Blender. < hears it's not the professionally used tool, but < thinks it'd be something fun to tinker with.

< has mucked about with Blender before. < believes it's notoriously difficult to learn, but it can give good results if you put in the effort!

< bets Fifo could figure out Blender, that would be a good thing to try out.

But… < doesn’t have a computer strong enough for that! <’s Mac only has integrated graphics.

EDIT: Yay, new rank!

Sexy!
Well, the GPU is only used to preview your animation, all the actual rendering is done on the CPU(s). < used to find it interesting to watch <'s frames render in six separate segments on <'s old Phenom II X6, then when < built the machine with a Core i7 they split up into eight instead.

< tried blender herself as well but < didn't muck about with it enough to manage to make anything out of it

< doesn't believe that ^ needs anything more than IGP to get things done. Especially on learning it. < had a friend who used Blender to make things with on a freaking Intel Atom netbook. < has a feeling ^'s Mac is a lot more awesome than that. ;)

< might just try it. :P
(and hope <’s processor won’t die xD)

<'s been pretty interested in modelling recently too, < was thinking about why so many models are made with quads rather than triangles when, to <'s understanding, rendering software converts all shapes into triangles eventually anyway.
