My most-hated level in R1 would probably go to Alegro Presto, but I have no problem with it these days.

Alegro Presto can be a nightmare for those who don't dominate Rayman 1 controls and when they don't have the helicopter. Today I also haven't any problem on this level.

An idea occurred to me: wouldn't it be possible to give R1 GBC a 'remake' of sorts by recreating its levels in Rayman Designer? I haven't played either recently, but if I recall correctly, most of R1 GBC's worlds, enemies and items appear in Designer. R1 GBC's level design wasn't bad; I'd like to see it rescued from the GBC's constraints.

I think it's much too different for that.

Spellbound Forest, Rainy Forest, Ancient Forest and Arcane Forest could all be created as Dream Forest levels; Airy Tunes from Band Land; Rocky Peaks from the Blue Mountains; Fiery Depths from the Caves of Skops. Dark Legacy is more difficult, but I think the Caves of Skops is the closest fit.
I seem to remember the game having a lot of Antitoons; these are no problem. Bad Rayman and Mister Dark would need to be transferred to the Dream Forest for the Arcane Forest level; may be difficult. Tings, lives, plums, flying rings, lianas and platforms such as clouds would pose no problem. Were there nenuphars? I can't remember; if so, no problem. Were there piranhas? Sean didn't do a very good job of adding what he called "R1 GBC Facts" to the wiki... but nenuphars and piranhas are easy. Also, livingstones. No problem.
The flood levels could be hard. The levels would need cages, which I'm not sure of the difficulty of. Those coward platforms from the R2 2D prototype would need to be ripped from the PlayStation game and added to Designer... Getting lava in the caves could be problematic... Slippery platforms in Airy Tunes (as well as all the sharp notes) would be easy... Replacing those bonus signs and their accompanying bonus levels with Magicians would be good, but require more hacking...
Getting a Mister Dark boss fight in there would be a triumph, and possibly the hardest thing of all.
I think someone should at least give this a go and make one or two simple levels. What about the first Spellbound Forest level? Surely that would be doable?

What about PCX editing?

You mean impossible...
spiraldoor wrote:The flood levels could be hard.
Flood levels are fine.
spiraldoor wrote:The levels would need cages, which I'm not sure of the difficulty of.
We have a mediocre cage, based on lavaballs.

What?

Cave was really stripped down.

Magicians are fine, but bonus levels are an impossibility.

I think it's possible, but the codes couldn't be discovered by any mere mortal.

I guess.

What?
The 2D bonus level in R2 PS1 had cowardly platforms that flew away if you got too close to them. They looked just like those platforms from R1 GBC, but with better graphics/animations. A Designer remake of R1 GBC would need to have these inserted, I think.
Other GBC objects found in Designer include lightning eyes and those spiky blue things. And many others, I believe.

I know that, but ripping and inserting into RD is what I meant. I don't believe such a thing is possible.

Of course it's possible, we just don't know how to do it.
~The R1 GBC tracks are all basically castrated versions of the R2 tracks. In the remake, the R1 GBC tracks would be substituted with the original, CD-quality ones.

Those "cowardly" platforms are actually platforms you drag around with you >.>
if you hit one with your fist, you get a leash, and you can tug them fowards you by pressing the circle button. The r2 2d bonus level was a early r2 beta.

Interesting things to confirm about the Saturn version!
While much of the whole game is the same as the PS1 version, in the final battle, you know those stain-glass windows with all the bosses on? Well they flash according to which of the hybrids are being attacked. Say for example I was attacking the Skops-stone hybrid [learned how to knock 2 HP off for each time he threw the claw BTW], the windows with Mr Stone and Mr Skops flash, and so on. Then, when all 3 are defeated, all the glass shatters, revealing a second moon in the background sky! So apparently, the world has had 2 moons from the very beginning, it's just that no players other than Saturn ones have seen it, so it wasn't all in vain after all.
But that's not all, after that, Rayman does some kinda breakdance while pulling out a hunters' gun, then it goes to the fireworks ending and the credits, which show those photographs but as still images rather than that floating cube thing. Sadly as I don't think there's a saturn emulator that'll even get me past the first level, let along Mr Dark, I couldn't take screenshots but I'll be looking into getting either a DVD recorder or a digital TV recorder to hook it up with.
BTW thanks for the tips on getting past Pencil Pentathlon, I haven't lost anywhere near as many lives as I would have that way.

Nice!!

I would so love to see Rayman doing that breakdance you're describing. I've seen sprites of him with the gun but that's really just it. Also, interesting how it's got two moons as well... I've always just thought of that as an R3 thing.

Well this is just fucking awesome. Seriously, what you just said about the windows and the moons has put me in a good mood for today, unless something very bad happens!
The info about the two moons is yet another piece of heavy evidence for the argument that R1 is in the same world as the other games.
The windows flash like that in the PlayStation version as well (but only two of them light up for the third hybrid, which is presumably a mistake on the developers' part). But the windows shattering and revealing the moons... this is just great. Do the three windows light up for the third hybrid in the Saturn version?
Pity about the Saturn version's crappy FMVs (including the credits sequence). I still think the PS1 version is the best overall, but this has done a great deal to increase my favour towards the Saturn version.
