Haruka, wow, really?? I thought every European country must have English as one of the most important subjects...

At least in Portugal it works like this:

- English is started officially at school at 5th grade as "Abroad Language I", and it continues until the 11th grade. If you choose to follow a Languages and Humanities course in High School, you continue to have English in 12th grade. I'm not sure if you need to do an exam in this case.

- I heard that the Ministery of Education wants to start to give English classes as an obligatory one in primary school around 3rd/4th grade, but I'm not sure if it is already implemented or not.

Wow... O_o As for Latvia, we have English not only from 1st grade, but even from "preparatory class" (not sure about correct English term, but it is additional pre-school class where children go after kindergarten if they still can't read, count, etc). So, every child is learning English here for at least 12 years and, if count preparatory class, 13 years.
In 5th grade starts second abroad language and it's not so important, but you can officially choose French or German exam as an additional exam at the end of studying in school. There are no other exams, but if school allows, you can learn also Chinese, Japanese, Spanish, Portuguese and some other languages, not sure which concretly, it depends of school.

There are some differences between schools here, by the way. Many people know that here are a lot of Russians, so here are schools for Latvian children and a lot for Russian children. In Latvian school, children are learning English and Latvian (as native) from 1st grade. German/French from 5th till 12th grade and Russian only from 5th till 9th grade...
Russian schools are different - we are learning three languages (Latvian, English and Russian) from 1st grade and also - German of French from 5th.

I was learning French for three years, after I have changed school, I was learning German for three years too.

I guess, seeing as English is the main language of the world, there's far less enthusiasm about learning second languages here. If I recall correctly, French is required here for only the first three grades. In the States, it's completely optional to learn a second language, that being Spanish.

I had an American in my house once (wife of one of my dad's mates) and I tried so hard to contain myself from giggling at her thick deep south accent but then everyone else found it hysterical as well. Then, there is skype.

I love it when they pronounce the word "herb" with a silent "h". It's like they think they're French all of a sudden.

Uhm... I see nothing bad in those pronunciations... at least, most of them are easy to understand (for me). US General accent sounds more distinct than any other for me.

You don't see anything wrong in your way of saying Aluminium? THERE'S A GOD DAMN I IN BETWEEN THE U AND N. Even Biffy Clyro said something about it in the song "Born On A Horse"
Herbs does not have a silent H and I've never ever seen a British person say "Toe-may-toe". It's toe-mah-toe. And I'm not insulting you people, I'm just insulting your language. Colour has a u in it for example. It's not rocket science

Alright, alright, I think you've demonstrated your point.
I have heard some of my peers use Toe-may-toe and Toe-Mah-Toe interchangeably, my preference is towards the "Mah."
