<'s 3DS has the exact same problem. Blowing into the side of the R button fixes mine (temporarily) as < believes it's got something to do with a build up of dust, though I don't know if that'll work with the classic DS

It continued to register as long as < kept hitting it.
< Pressed and hit it more than blow into it and it does work when < does that
Sometimes it registers but sometimes it chooses not to work
So it was like an automatic on and off process.
< Had to pause the game everytime the button does not register
< Found it very annoying and eventually thought dust was the problem

< just thought about how badly-named "depressions" are in meteorology. It's an area of low pressure, so the value on the barometer is "depressed". But physically the air is less "depressed". < wonders if they came up with it to confuse people.
