Re: Sonic the Hedgehog
I agree. Sonic Adventure 2 isn't that good of a game. I only enjoyed the Sonic and Shadow levels. I enjoyed the Tails and Eggman levels too, but not as much as the Sonic/Shadow levels. And I absolutely hated the Knuckles and Rouge stages. I can't stand those levels at all. The only thing as worthy as the Sonic levels is the Chao Garden. I love taking care of those things. Sega should make an entire game out of that.

Re: Sonic the Hedgehog
So far the only decent 3d Sonic games are Generations and Colors...
Re: Sonic the Hedgehog
I at least give Adventure 2 credit for legitimately trying to be a good game. I wouldn't say Sonic had the smoothest transition to 3D, but they definitely gave a shot at trying to make it work. There's some pretty shitty ideas here and there, and it unfortunately paved the way for years of cringe inducing characters and voice acting, but potentially it could have shaped up to have been something decent.
Even though Colours is pretty clearly the first time they got it right, Adventure at least looks like it had the potential to make Sonic grow into that kinda thing, whereas everything that came between the two is just filled with hilariously bad choices and Sonic feeling hopelessly charmless and having no clear direction. Take in mind that finished or not, the plot of 06 was on the level of fanfiction, and it makes it even more sad when you realise that the cutscenes are about the only thing in the game that feel finished.

He's even so cool that he has his own theme song!

Re: Sonic the Hedgehog
Holy shit Sith, you've got quite the eye catcher.
What I don't understand is, all these years of 3D Sonic, and the developers failed to realize the one thing we really wanted up until Generations, speed. Colors is pretty good but it was far too much filled with blocky platforming. You can criticize Generations for being linear, but it by far is the best 3D transition Sonic has had. While the game was divided into two different types of gameplay, which I usually hate, both characters play exactly the same which is the way it should be. I swear I've spent so much time on Generations just replaying levels uncovering new shortcuts, THAT is what Sonic is about, setting your best time, finding new shortcuts, and finding the quickest way possible to beat a level, it's fun and satisfying.
Indeed. But it was just yesterday where I decided to stop giving Sonic Adventure 2 free passes, because it is NOT a good game. I still have fun but the only "fun" in Adventure 2 is a mere 30% of the game in the action stages, and a 10% in the Chao gardens, the remaining 60% wasn't good. Adventure 2 had so much potential, it's pretty sad when you see all the potential it had if the whole game were just Sonic and Shadow stages. This is a common trend amonst modern Sonic games that NEEDS to die if the series wants to be succesful. 3D Sonic games always constantly wants to reinvent itself, and Adventure 2 did this a lot, however this carried over to Unleashed, where you had the daytime stages that were super fun but that was only at least 30% of the game, the remaining 70% being a slow werehog. It's not fun, and fans will always try to tell themselves that they are enjoying it when they really aren't.Keane wrote:I at least give Adventure 2 credit for legitimately trying to be a good game. Adventure, unfortunately, set Sonic up for unfortunate doom in his later 3D titles. The story in Sonic games, NEVER were good, not once. On the Genesis while the story was nonexistent, it was simple, and they should've kept that method, instead they try to find all these cringe inducing way to give the story a bit of edge. As for 06, I'm not sure why that project was never cancelled... or even looked at. Nobody at Sonic Team looked at that and pointed anything out? I wonder.Keane wrote:Even though Colours is pretty clearly the first time they got it right, Adventure at least looks like it had the potential to make Sonic grow into that kinda thing, whereas everything that came between the two is just filled with hilariously bad choices and Sonic feeling hopelessly charmless and having no clear direction. Re: Sonic the Hedgehog
I'd argue that Sonic 3 & Knuckles went fairly close to having a coherent story without a single line of dialogue : It's obvious that some of the levels are a continuation of others (Sand Sanctuary --> Lava Reef --> Hidden Sanctuary). It might explain why it's the only game I'm willing to defend.Rayfist wrote:The story in Sonic games, NEVER were good, not once. Weren't there also hints to show that Knuckles' story took place after Sonic's, like Angel Island Zone being in the sky?'

Re: Sonic the Hedgehog
So... is anyone a little concerned about the status of SEGA? It was recently revealed they will not be hosting a booth at E3 this year.
With Sonic Boom's awful sales, I think SEGA may just be heading to rest and it's easy to see why. SEGA clearly ignores a lot of their IP's like Jet Set Radio or NiGHTS, it's sad because SEGA can produce so much more than just Sonic. Lash out at Nintendo all you want for rehashing Mario, but at least Nintendo offers a lot of other genre's than just Mario, all SEGA has now these days is Sonic. Sonic is what's keeping that company afloat, and that support beam is breaking.
SEGA could've tried new things, they were always way too scared to experiment with there other franchises. So this may as well be the last we'll see of SEGA. I don't like to make false accusations, but with the status they're in, they should be afraid.

Re: Sonic the Hedgehog
All the Sonic games I've played since Sonic 3 are awful. So either I'm shit at picking games or it's not a big loss for the franchise.
Re: Sonic the Hedgehog
Most Sonic games since Sonic 3 and Knuckles are "meh" at best. The better ones would be the Adventure duo (1 is better than 2 IMO), Heroes, Colours and Generations. The 2D games on the GBA and DS are also quite good. There are also some "love it or hate it" titles like Unleashed, Sonic 4 and 3D Blast. Sonic R is fun for a quick laugh, but it's short length lets it down. Rivals and Rivals 2 I've never played, but other than that I've listed pretty much every "good" Sonic game. It's a pity that there aren't more.

Re: Sonic the Hedgehog
You too master? I had both Rivals 1 and 2 and i thought they were decent racing games but unfortunately felt very 'hold right to win.'
Unfortunately I'm inclined to agree, Sonic games have seen a steady decline after the genesis days. Though I wouldn't say the newer games were 'awful'.
Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 are bad games, Heroes is bad, Shadow the Hedgehog is awful, Riders was alright very linear, Rider 2 Zero Gravity was bad, Sonic 06... yeah, Unleashed was bad, it wasn't until Colors when we FINALLY got a good Sonic game. A whole two generations of bad 3D games until they finally got things right with Colors. On that note why are the handheld games so forgotten? The Sonic Advance series, and Sonic Rush are highly praised by critics and fans.
You can argue Colors was linear as fuck, but it's the best Sonic game in a while, same with Generations, they took what made classic Sonic fun and put translated it well into 3d, discovering alternate routes and the faster path, Sonic has always been about replayability for me and Colors and Generations were no exception. I actually had high hopes for Sonic after these games, they gave you the impression Sonic had a bright future.
And so Lost World came out. It was alright, a massive downgrade from the previous titles but really only felt like a minor road bump. And then Boom came out which made me lose a lot of faith in the Sonic franchise for just being that awful. And now we have SEGA being rumored to die out. SEGA dug this for themselves. They never listened to fans and this is why we get the product we have today. What have people asked for? A Sonic adventure, MINUS the emerald hunting and shooting, such a game would go down really well since even people who disliked SA1 and 2 admitted the Sonic stages were fun. SEGA even blatantly ignores there millions of other franchises here in the West. We've still yet to see a new Jet Set Radio since, what? 2003 I think?
The problem with 3D Sonic games is that they always feel the need to constantly reinvent itself. Generations went down well due to the fact the game was pure Sonic. No emerald hunting or shooting levels, which is exactly the way it should be.
I don't see how any company could live off just one franchise, but SEGA did it, and now they're fading away.
Unfortunately, a lot of the good Sonic games are in the 2D era, not just the classic games, people seem to forget how amazing the Game Gear titles were, Sonic Chaos especially.

This young fellow should probably work on his lung capacity. He gets tired pretty quickly.
Also I hate how this video has almost a million views when I bust my ass off to create good content that ultimately gets 200 views at best

Re: Sonic the Hedgehog
You're wrong.
As much as I like Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 because of nostalgia, both are bad games in there own aspects.
Go watch Projared's analysis. SA1 and 2 are NOT good games. As bad as 06? Definitely not, but bad in there own right.
You know there's clearly a problem when you only enjoy a few characters out of a huge selection.
There's CLEARLY a problem when you only enjoy the Sonic/Shadow stages which are a mere 20-25% of the game.
Overall, they are NOT good games, sorry but really don't let nostalgia blind you so much, I hate being the one to say "nostalgia goggles", but Sonic Adventure really isn't a good game.

Re: Sonic the Hedgehog
I played through Sonic 1 yesterday without dying
, also I had 15 lives and encountered a glitch. (I'll post a pic tomorrow) I also completed Sonic CD and encountered a glitch there too.
Re: Sonic the Hedgehog
Adventure is only good if you compare it to other shitstains of the series and lower your expectations to it just managing to accomplish being OK. I think there was an attempt made at a decent game, but it holds almost no competition against pretty much every other good platformer of the time, unless you really enjoyed playing through a shitty driving stage that looks beyond dull, only to be rewarded by another crappy Tales stage.
