I mostly use Discord, that's where I have most of my online friends.
I also like how it was thought for gamers and people can see what game I am playing :)
Too bad they ruined the Android app..

Sometimes it feels like Android apps exist for no other reason than to be ruined by future updates :oops2:

Like Firefox for Android for example. It supported so many extensions and had this cool feature where you could open a link from another app and it'd be there waiting for you when you next opened the browser, instead of popping up straight away. Then there was a major update, and suddenly you couldn't even reorder tabs anymore :tssk: (They've gradually brought back tab ordering and extension support, but taking it all away at once was a bit ridiculous all the same!)

I never really got into Reddit, but I can indeed imagine myself liking it. So it's probably better I stay away in case it becomes a new time sink for me! :oops2:

I love Reddit but I can avoid it because I’ve made <35 posts which is nothing compared to this site :fou:

I never considered Discord social media, since it's not like Twitter or Facebook in that regard. It's always been more of an instant messaging platform that took over from Skype's demise in popularity.

Though regardless of my opinion on that, it is the number one source I use for communicating with my friends as well. Once I used Windows Live Messenger / MSN Messenger, when it got shut down I had to use Yahoo Messenger / Skype and Steam due to that... and Discord ended up being the ultimate place to go for me. Say fast forward a few+ years when I got into Splatoon 2 in 2019, I met a lot more people that way and on that platform. Especially from the competitive scene.

Twitter I don't care much about, I refuse to call it "X" because screw that nonsense. The blue bird was so much better and had a much better value and was more well known. Just because Elon Musk is obsessed with "X" doesn't mean I have to like it. I mostly use Twitter at this point for Splatoon clips and somewhat keeping up with some of my friends' activities.

Then Facebook isn't something I keep up with at all, I just can't be assed to keep up with too many places anyway.

Assuming this is just a joke stab, but I thought Discord's mobile app was the same feature wise between Android and iOS? I'm sure someone who uses an iOS device would be able to clarify this for me. I primarily use Android, myself.

Even that being the case, I still ultimately will use Discord primarily on my desktop or laptops. I just like having a larger screen and a nice full physical keyboard. Mobile hotspot + laptop = perfection for me.

Besides dedicated forums such as this one, I don't use much social media anymore. I used to be relatively active on Reddit, but I left as I found the constant smugness from people with no self-awareness exhausting. I was rather disappointed to see that awful site come out of the recent API controversy relatively unscathed.

To be honest, I've never really found Reddit interesting. I've always found most of the subreddits chaotic, messy and plenty of s*** people. Of course, you can find nice people there and there are lots of differences between the different subreddits, but I'm not really into the idea of creating a user there.

It honestly depends on where you go at Reddit. I love to use r/AITA but I know a lot of people seriously hate it

Well, what immediately triggers it for me is the stupid abbreviations they use everywhere. Including AITA.

If you’re gonna complain about the Reddit abbreviations you have to complain about rayman pirate community being shortened to RPC

It's not the concept of abbreviations that aggravates me so much as Reddit's overreliance on unoriginal quips and thoughts as a substitute to intelligent conversation. Redditors act pretentious, but they ultimately have nothing of substance to add to any discussion they stumble upon.

They are physically incapable of agreeing with someone without commenting, 'this'.
They are physically incapable of disagreeing with someone without commenting, 'yikes'.
They share the same political opinions on everything, downvoting anything that they think deviates too far from the hivemind.

Reddit is just social media for people who think they are too intelligent for social media.

That’s not Reddit, that’s the YouTubers trying to get clicks complaining about Reddit’s stories

That is Reddit. I was on that site for 6+ years; I know exactly what it was like.

There’s a reason why the term ‘Redditor’ is used as an insult on the Internet, and that opinion extends far beyond YouTube clickbait.

I generally avoid Reddit as much as possible, every now and then things I do have to look up could be found on there. It's not something I'm ever going to participate in.

I hold a very similar position.

Of all the popular social media which I don't use (that is all of it), Reddit is the only one I ever considered using. It has a whole lot of useful information and fruitful discussions, related to many many different fields of interest. This cannot be denied. There are many web searches where the best results I found came from Reddit.

But its downsides are big as well - first of all - it's a mess. The threads are hard to follow with replies nested within other replies. There is no reasonable hierarchy in Subreddits - you can have something like r/Mathematics which deals with anything math, and r/ApplicationOfTrigonometricIdentitiesToProblemsInAnalyticalGeometryOverComplexFields, both seemingly at the same top level.

The absolutely worst thing about it, though, is that it is centralized, just like Facebook and Twitter/X - and managed by one corporate entity. And if that corporate entity decides it does not like you - because your political opinion is considered "too far from the hivemind", or because you were targeted by a hostile group and your account was repeatedly reported as "offensive" - that entity has the ultimate, irrevocable, and undisputable power to ban you across the entire platform.

And this simply not the kind of power I wish to grant to any kind of corporation. So I end up using Reddit as a source of information only, and never contribute anything myself. Their loss.

That's honestly a good point that I thought, but didn't write out. Most of the time when you're searching for information by a Google search, you'll generally come across a few Reddit threads. Depending on the search criteria I've seen some useful results out of it and sometimes a dead end. Some folks seeking answers on Reddit in some cases never get a response, for example.

The mess is one of the bigger turn offs to me there, the deeper the replies get nested with other replies, the less tolerance I have to keep digging into anything.

Yep, and we all know how corporations can be, big, powerful, and corrupt Easily allowing for the abuse of the system just as you described it. No one will have a civil conversation about anything, and it can be as bad as political opinions to whichever freaking video game character you may like/dislike and whose team you choose in a video game.

For example, Splatoon, people go absolutely nuts over their choice of idols. Splatoon 3 is no different where you have Shiver fans attacking Frye fans, visa versa. Many of my friends literally ignore certain Twitter topics whenever Splatfest is around because of just how awful that can be. They're just video game characters for crying out loud. :tssk:

I'm just in it for my damn super sea snails, I don't care who wins. I mean just play to have fun, it isn't exactly that hard to.

Sadly a lot of communities suffer the same fate, but at least we know there still are some good people out there. Even if all the toxic people scream and throw a temper tantrum at louder levels.

Oh god yeah lmao I learned this the hard way. That's the only downside to that site imo, that you sometimes get downvote bombed by a community even if you're right, just because somebody didn't like what you said.
