Hmm, let's run this through in my head.
First time you can get it is in the Sanctuary of Stone and Fire, in which there are two, one in the first level, one in the other temple.
There's one in the Precipice, 2nd level, near the top of the tower.
There's one in the Top of the World.
There's one in the Sanctuary of Rock and Lava, near the Sanctuary's entrance.
There's one in the Tomb of the Ancients, at the beginning of the optional area in the second level.
There's one in the Iron Mountains, after you defeat a Robot Pirate.
There's one in the Prison Ship, near where you fight a Ninja Pirate.

So, tallying it up, I'm going with 8.
